Position Title: Youth Recreation Official
Department: Recreation
Department Head: Parks & Recreation Director
Immediate Supervisor: Recreation Coordinators
Pay Range: $15.00 - $35.00/hour
Purpose
This is a part-time/seasonal position working under the direction of Recreation Coordinators. Responsible for officiating/scoring youth sporting events such as softball, baseball, basketball, flag football, and tackle football. Assists Recreation Coordinator as necessary.
Organizational Relationships
Communicates with: Internally – Public Works, Arena Staff, Civic Center, Community Center, and City Auditorium.
Externally – Community Members, Local organizations, and sports associations
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Assist in the planning, development and implementation of youth recreation programs.
- Record game points and other required game information.
- Move up and down the court/field/turf with the flow of the sporting event.
- Watch for and call rule violations.
- Provide security for community events, assists in set up and take down of athletic events.
- Resolve problems and conflicts at game sites.
- Assist volunteer coaches.
- Teach youth proper sporting techniques, sportsmanship, teamwork, etc.
- Prepare reports and other written documents.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Fundamentals of public relations theories and techniques in promoting, advertising, and/or informing the public of programs, services, courses, or other events/projects.
- Supervise opening and locking of facilities and uphold the rules of the facility.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by the Recreation Coordinator.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of current sports rules and recreational programming opportunities.
- Ability to resolve problems and conflicts.
- Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, volunteers, department staff, and the public.
- Reliable transportation may be required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in sports/recreation
- Knowledge in basic rules of sporting events
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Sports officiating experience
- Experience working with youth
WORKING CONDITIONS
This position is performed in both outdoor and indoor environments, depending on the season and sport. Walks, sits, stands, bends, lifts, and moves continually during working hours; is subject to lifting over 50 pounds. Operates a variety of equipment and machinery. Occasionally enters confined spaces. Experiences temperate extremes and must maintain balance while working on the ice surface. Exposure to irritants/fumes, hazardous chemicals, infectious diseases, noise, and electric shock.
