Reporting to the Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Dean of Academic Affairs is a senior member of the Provost's leadership team, directs a broad range of academic and faculty personnel matters, and works collaboratively with constituents across the College. The Dean will lead the planning, operation, and assessment of professional development programs for faculty across all curricula and academic areas. The Dean will serve as OAA liaison with the College Communications Office and oversee OAA communications and public relations activities with the internal and external community. In all assigned areas of responsibility, and as a key member of the Provost’s team, the Dean will contribute to a vision of institutional success guided by strategic planning, innovative thinking, intra- and cross-divisional collaboration, and continuous assessment.

The Dean of Academic Affairs will serve as a resource in supporting and guiding the Academic Departmental Chairs. The Dean will support Academic Departmental Chairs in arranging for careful observation and guidance of instructional staff and in general supervision of, but not limited to: mentoring of junior faculty in the development of a scholarly agenda through grant proposals, conference proposals, and publication strategies; mentoring of tenured faculty to advance their scholarship, service, and pedagogy; ensuring resources are available to support teaching activities; supporting best-practices in teaching observations, evaluations, and student complaint protocols; reviewing transfer credit evaluation processes. In collaboration with faculty, the Division of Academic Affairs leadership, and the Human Resources department, the Dean will support Academic Departmental Chairs in procedures related to faculty personnel actions. They will support Academic Departmental Chairs and the Director of Academic Operations in the Reappointment, Tenure, and Promotion (RPT) Guidelines following the direction of the College governance plan.

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Oversee academic policies, curricular processes, and program development to ensure compliance with CUNY, New York State Education Department, Middle States, and programmatic accreditation standards, in consultation with appropriate stakeholders, including College Shared Governance.
  • In conjunction with the Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs, align all Academic Affairs planning with the College’s Strategic Plan, assessment results and processes, and Middle States compliance.
  • In collaboration with the Registrar, Academic Departmental Chairs and Coordinators, oversee faculty teaching assignments, scheduling, and college-wide course enrollments.
  • Oversee (directly or through direct reports) Pre-College Programs and College Now, Study Abroad, Academic Technology, Articulation Agreements, Academic Success Center, Honors, and the First Year Experience.
  • Implement and evaluate programs to ensure that tenured, tenure-track, and adjunct faculty are supported in ways that foster student and professional success, including identifying and pursuing grant opportunities to support faculty professional development.
  • Oversee (directly or through direct reports) Academic Affairs initiatives such as Coordinated Undergraduate Education, Writing Across the Curriculum, Credit for Prior Learning, and other emerging student success initiatives.
  • Manage grant-funded budgets, as assigned.
  • Oversee the college’s faculty workload collection, ensuring accuracy and meeting CUNY and CBA requirements.
  • Oversee revision and updating of the Faculty Handbook, the OAA web site, and other communication channels.
  • Serve on Academic Affairs committees and subcommittees at the College and University, as assigned.
  • Represent the Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs at College, University, and other external programs as needed.
  • Supervise assigned staff in accordance with Guttman and CUNY policies.
  • Assume other related duties assigned by the Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs.

Qualifications

This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience. Additional qualifications are defined below by the College.

Preferred Qualifications

  • University teaching experience complemented by superior research and scholarly record and a record of academic achievement in the discipline meriting appointment as a tenured Associate or Full Professor.
  • A record of proven leadership, program management and assessment, and supervisory experience in a community college setting, with 2-3 years or higher administrative experience at or above the level of Department Chairperson.
  • Experience in fiscal management, faculty and staff development, promoting university and community relations, and strong written and oral communication and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Evidence of a strong commitment to the goals of urban, public higher education serving diverse populations, especially as it connects to the Guttman Strategic Plan, and to an understanding of the historical role of Guttman within CUNY.
  • Experience working successfully across administrative offices and with faculty.

Compensation And Benefits

$150,000 - $160,000; Salary commensurate with education and experience.
