GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
The Special Education (resource) teacher is a member of the multi-disciplinary professional team. The special education teacher provides specially designed instruction to students with an IEP. The special education teacher works to ensure meaningful parent participation and develops Individualized Education Program (IEP) plans within a multi-disciplinary team approach. Also provides students with experiences that will give them opportunities to develop mature, responsible behaviors necessary for future success, and to ensure instruction is differentiated and provided in the least restrictive environment alongside peers in the general education setting.

Reports to the Director of Student Support Services

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Knowledgeable in working with students that demonstrate a wide range of academic and social/emotional and behavior needs to ensure a meaningful education and academic progress
Provides research-based, data driven, specialized instruction to address the instructional goals and objectives contained within each student’s IEP using a variety of individual and group activities.
Assesses student progress and determines the need for additional reinforcement or adjustments to instructional techniques.
Employs various teaching techniques, methods and principles of learning to enable students to meet their IEP goals.
Establishes and maintains positive classroom management.
Provides appropriate academic instruction, behavioral and/or social/emotional supports to students using research-based interventions and strategies.
Must be able to demonstrate competency in directing the day-to-day activities of assigned paraprofessionals.
Develops and implements annual IEPs as district case manager for students to include: present levels of educational performance, special education needs, instructional goals and objectives, and the special education and related services required to meet those goals
Provides consultation to regular education, special education, support staff and parents, and other agencies regarding programming for students with exceptional learning needs
Advocating for students with different learning needs for instructional accommodations and inclusive practices to ensure a meaningful education
Serves a continuum of students in a variety of settings ranging from partial to full inclusion
Plans, develops, maintains and reviews Individualized Educational Programs, and collect ESY data as required under the IDEA and ECEA
Establishes and maintains confidential records of screenings, evaluations, and progress towards goals as required under the IDEA and ECEA rules
Prepares and submits reports for the Director of Student Support Services
Attends conferences and workshops regarding learning disabilities and intervention techniques
Participates in staff development activities as required
Delivers interventions to all levels in the identified area(s) of need in the IEP with direct, explicit instruction
Uses technology in communication with students, peers, parents, and administration
Facilitates inclusion of all students and models disability etiquette at all times
Designs motivational strategies for at-risk learners within a multi-disciplinary team approach
Develops and coordinates behavior management plans within a multi-disciplinary team approach
Performs other duties as requested from the Director of Student Support Services
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
Assists other members of the Student Support Services multidisciplinary team as needed
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION AND LICENSURE:
Bachelor’s degree and additional coursework required for Special Education Generalist licensure
Master’s degree in Special Education preferred
Valid Colorado Teaching license/certificate endorsed Special Education Generalist
Will consider TTE for strong candidates
EXPERIENCE:
Thorough knowledge of the principles and methodology of effective teaching of students with disabilities. Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of special education.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Participate on the multi-disciplinary team to identify students with disabilities
Demonstrate the ability to work with students of all ages and disabling conditions
Maintain confidentiality of all records and information at all times under FERPA, IDEA and ECEA requirements
Train and oversee Student Support Service paraprofessional
Initiate contact with parents and serve as a liaison
SCOPE OF INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS:
Facilitate clear communication between and among students, parents, teachers, special service providers, and building administration
Display positive collegial relationships
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is generally performed in the resource room or designated area. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will work primarily in a usual office or school environment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk or sit. Mental Functions: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use interpersonal skills. Frequently required to compare, analyze, communicate, coordinate, instruct, compute, synthesize, evaluate and negotiate. Occasionally required to copy and compile.
