Description

Summary

Directs and participates in the maintenance of the golf courses including tees, greens, fairways, bunkers, cart paths and the rough. Maintains playing conditions to the highest possible standards set forth by Ibis.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Oversees all course construction and maintenance.
  2. Develops and maintains drainage, irrigation, and watering systems.
  3. Directs subordinate supervisors on tasks to be carried out to maintain golf courses in proper playing condition.
  4. Inspects courses regularly to evaluate and recommend improvements.
  5. Coordinates applicable work with outside contractors.
  6. Determines if and when courses should be closed due to weather conditions. 
  7. Ensures labor and costs remain within budget guidelines.
  8. Meets with Director of Golf Course Maintenance and Director of Golf to discuss conditions of facilities, maintenance plans, and scheduled events.
  9. Conducts staff and safety meetings to ensure that safety standards are met.
  10. Attends turf conferences, equipment shows, workshops, and other educational programs to maintain a current knowledge of technical and turf innovations and changes that could affect the department's operations.

Other Functions

  • Performs other duties as assigned by Director of Golf Course Maintenance.
  • Complies with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations and ensures corrective action is completed in a timely manner.
  • Ensures employees are properly trained on specific job equipment and documents equipment training.
  • Keeps the Director of Golf Course Maintenance informed of any significant matters.

Supervisory Responsibility

Manages subordinate supervisors who supervise a total of 60 employees/contract laborers on all three golf courses. Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of these units. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience 

Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year College or technical school; or six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Additional year of experience. Turf Management degree/or currently enrolled preferred. Previous golf course maintenance experience.

Language Skills  

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents.  Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints.  Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style.  Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

Mathematical Skills  

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability 

Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems.  Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, musical notes, etc.,) in its most difficult phases.  Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.

Computer Skills

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Database software; Internet software; Project Management software and MS Office.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Florida Pesticide License
  • Valid Driver’s License

 

Other Skills and Abilities

  • A working knowledge of the maintenance of golf courses, to include, turf grass management, landscaping, irrigation and pumps, drainage systems, and integrated pest management practices.
  • Knowledge of fertilizers, chemicals and soil conditioners is required.
  • Knowledge of how to operate all golf course maintenance equipment.
  • Knowledge of game of golf, rules of golf and ability to play the game of golf.
