POSITION: Youth Program Assistant
REPORTS TO: Youth Program Supervisor
STATUS: Full-Time – Hourly
OVERVIEW: The Program Assistant will provide appropriate case management and instruction for school-aged guests ranging from 5 to 17 years of age at the Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida. Under the Direct supervision of the Youth Program Supervisor, the Program Assistant will facilitate in the implementation of, life skills programs, tutoring/academic assistance, health and nutrition programs, and a variety of other services to homeless youth that are participants of the Homeless Youth and Families Program. The Program Assistant will also be responsible assisting the Youth Program Coordinator in maintaining case files of assigned youth enrolled in the program and any additional programmatic needs as the Youth Program Supervisor sees fit. The Program Assistant requires a high degree of ethics, commitment, compassion, and flexibility to effectively uphold the mission and values of the Youth Program and of the Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida as a whole.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Associates Degree
1 year of Experience working with youth with behavioral issues or disabilities ideal.
1 Year of Experience with Children and Families Experiencing Homelessness Services is ideal.
1 Years of Teaching/Tutoring Experience or Other Relevant Experience working with school-aged youth.
1-2 Years of Case Management experience.
Bilingual candidates are highly encouraged to apply.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Supervise youth during daily schedule of indoor and outdoor activities and on field trips, outings, and special events
- Maintain relationships with youth and families and facilitate the youth’s participation
- Facilitate planned and spontaneous program prepared curriculum and program materials
- Assist students with homework, projects, test preparation, papers, research, and other academic tasks.
- Helps arrange for and/or serve appropriate snacks or meals where applicable.
- Helps establish a program environment that promotes positive interactions with other children, youth, and adults
- Empower students and parents to be proactive in their child’s education and learning.
- Enter and maintain accurate and youth files and case notes.
- Assist in program evaluation using designated instruments such as programmatic rating scales, risk assessment tools, life skills surveys and satisfaction surveys
- Participate in planning meetings, case discussion, and group coordination.
- Assist in the active recruitment of youth into the Youth Program.
- Implement programmatic activities covering subjects such as health, fitness, nutrition, tutoring and life skills.
- Assist with other duties as requested or assigned.
- Maintain a clean and tidy youth room space daily.
- Exemplify Coalition mission statement, and adhere to agency policies and procedures.
NECESSARY SKILLS:
- Ability to motivate and encourage students to complete their assignments and improve their academic performance.
- Ability to solve problems, make decisions, and listen to determine student’s needs.
- Ability to adapt in the face of change and to be flexible with responsibilities.
- Ability to work under pressure and with multiple students.
- Computer skills including Microsoft Excel, Outlook, and Word with the ability to learn new programs.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks.
- Ability to employ organizational skills effectively
- Ability to complete and analyze documentation such as case notes
- Ability to communicate effectively
- Ability to develop a staff: guest rapport
- Upon hiring, candidate must pass a level 2 background screening.
- Must have current certification in CPR/First Aid (or be willing to become certified.)
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The work environment is characteristic of normal office conditions. While performing the duties of this job. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; reach with hands and use hands to handle or lift. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. During programs we are frequently outside and in the elements including hot and cold temperatures. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust focus. The employee must also possess hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the phone.
