Mid-Level Emergency Dept. / Hospitalist Practitioner (NP or PA)

FLSA Classification: Full Time, Non-Exempt, Hourly

The Mid-level Practitioner may not practice except under personal and responsible direction and supervision of a licensed physician. The Mid-level Practitioner may practice without the physical presence of the supervising physician, but the supervising physician must be available by phone and physical presence when requested. The supervising physician must review and sign all medical records within 24 hours.

Mid-level Practitioner shall be allowed to provide sole coverage in the Emergency Department according to Medical Staff bylaws, the Supervising Physician’s delegated scope of practice, and Colorado State Law. The working environment is a normal clinical setting with exposure to sharps and biological and chemical agents. It is expected that facility safety practices and protocols are followed at all times.

The Mid-level will float to the hospital while on shift in the ER, depending on volume.

Essential Functions
  • Direct patient care as specified by medical staff approved protocols.
  • Counsel and instruct patients and significant others as appropriate.
  • Initiate referral to appropriate physician or other healthcare professional for problems that exceed the practitioner’s scope of practice as well as for all admissions to the hospital, all patient transfers, and all high acuity cases.
  • Apply, remove, and change dressings and bandages.
  • Perform wound debridement and general care for superficial wounds.
  • Perform incisions, catheterization, field infiltration of anesthetic solutions, venous punctures, etc.
  • Performing diagnostic/therapeutic procedures, subject to state regulation and Mid-level practitioner training/experience such as abscess drainage, arterial puncture and gas sampling, cast and splint application, central line placement, epistaxis management, fracture reduction, and foreign body removal; ears, nose, rectum, soft tissue, throat, vaginal.
  • Order diagnostic testing and therapeutic modalities such as laboratory tests, EKG, medications, X-ray, IV fluids, etc.
  • Obtain and record medical/social history, record progress notes, and write discharge summaries.

Patient Care Within Scope Includes, but is not limited to:
  • Emergency ultrasonography
  • Immobilization techniques
  • Intubation – endotracheal/nasal
  • Interosseous needle placement
  • Laceration repair – simple, intermediate, and complex
  • Lumbar puncture
  • Nail trephination/removal
  • Nasogastric/orogastric tube placement, lavage and management.                                                     Obstetrical patient evaluation
  • Paracentesis
  • Procedural sedation management and administration of regional block anesthesia, including double cuff method/bier block.
  • Slit lamp diagnostic and rust ring removal.
  • Tonometry, ocular
  • Thoracentesis
  • Thoracotomy tube insertion
  • Other interventions or procedures as directed by supervising physician

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited practitioner program.
  • At least 3 years of experience.
  • Required completion of an Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Mid-level Practitioner approved program AND current certification by the National Commission on Certification
  • Current BLS, ACLS, ATLS, TNCC, and PALS required within six (6) months of hire or transfer.

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time.
  • Must be able to move and traverse about the facility 50% of the time.
  • Frequently transport objects weighing up to 50lbs
  • Occasionally position objects weighing up to 100lbs.
  • Must be able to communicate and exchange information in a way others will understand.
  • Must be able to recognize details such as color and depth within a few feet of the observer.
  • Frequently operates computers, machinery, and other healthcare equipment.
  • Constantly positions self to complete essential functions.
  • May be required to wear N95s or PAPRs up to 80% of the shift.
