PROVOST AND VICE PRESIDENT FOR ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

Leadership Profile

The College of New Jersey (TCNJ), one of the nation’s preeminent public institutions, seeks a visionary academic leader and experienced administrator with a strong record of effective leadership for the position of provost. The new provost will assume office in the summer of 2025.

THE ROLE OF PROVOST AND VICE PRESIDENT FOR ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

The provost leads the Office of Academic Affairs and organizes the strategic planning process, allocates resources, administers policies, and promotes high standards to achieve the college’s academic aspirations :

  • To be recognized nationally as a premier public, primarily undergraduate institution
  • To serve as a national exemplar in the education of those who seek to sustain and advance the communities in which they live

This office supports the work of over 360 full-time faculty and librarians and administers more than 50 degree programs offered through eight schools. Through this office, the institution allocates resources and administers policies that undergird faculty work with highly talented students at a college characterized by a collaborative, engaged, rigorous academic community. Some of the departments, programs, and procedures that fall under the Office of Academic Affairs include :

  • Academic integrity
  • Arlotto Family Center for Global Engagement
  • Celebration of Student Achievement
  • Center for Community Engaged Learning and Research / Bonner Institute
  • Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning
  • College Core
  • Faculty searches
  • First-Year Seminar Program
  • Honors and Scholars Program
  • Mentored Undergraduate Summer Experience (MUSE)
  • Office of Instructional Design

  • DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND CHARACTERISTICS

The successful candidate will bring significant academic and administrative experience, a highly relational approach, outstanding communication skills, self-confidence balanced with humility, integrity of the highest order, a strong work ethic, and a clear understanding of the value-added of the liberal arts to the TCNJ degree to the provost’s work. A PhD / terminal degree, tenure at the rank of full professor, and a scholarly record that garners the respect of the academic community at the college are typically expected — but excellent, nontraditional candidates are welcome. The Provost will support, respect, and commit to embracing diverse backgrounds, values, and points of view to build an intellectually curious and collaborative college community. Finally, the appointee will bring many of the following experiences, skills, and characteristics :

  • Professional experience at a similar-sized public or private institution that includes direct experience and familiarity with undergraduate, graduate, dual-enrollment, and online programs; experience with shared governance and unions preferred
  • Passion for or strong respect of the liberal arts tradition as well as the college’s professional areas of study
  • Strong ability to prioritize, ensuring that resources are allocated effectively and that urgent and long-term needs are balanced strategically for the institution’s success
  • The ability to effectively communicate with diverse stakeholders, including faculty, administration, students, and external stakeholders
  • Careful, active listening to the concerns and suggestions of faculty, staff, and students, ensuring that decisions are inclusive and well-informed
  • A relationship-builder, negotiator, and silo-breaker with direct experience leading a team of direct reports; solutions-oriented and resourceful
  • Ability to work with diverse academic departments, administrators, and faculty to build consensus on important issues, such as curriculum changes or resource distribution
  • Ability to mediate and resolve conflicts that arise between faculty members and / or departments, or between faculty and administration, while maintaining fairness and equity
  • An understanding of the campus climate, including the challenges faced by different groups within the college
  • Artful, adroit, wise, sensitive, clear-eyed, and resolute in executing tactics; a clear understanding that true higher education leadership is not management
  • Strong advocacy for inclusive excellence, ensuring that TCNJ fosters an environment where people from all backgrounds feel valued and supported
  • Adaptable and innovative, with the ability to think outside the box, challenge conventional approaches, and bring fresh ideas to complex issues to keep TCNJ moving forward in a rapidly evolving higher education landscape
