Job Description

The Department of Earth Sciences at The College of Wooster invites applications for a 1-year visiting position at the level of Assistant Professor, beginning in August 2025. We are seeking a broadly trained individual who can teach courses in structure, sedimentology, stratigraphy, and tectonics. The ability to teach GIS is desirable. The successful candidate will teach a combination of introductory and advanced courses for majors and non-majors. We value candidates who demonstrate a passion for teaching and mentoring and who can contribute to interdisciplinary programs connected with the Earth Sciences, such as Archaeology, Environmental Studies, and Statistical & Data Sciences. The Department is highly engaged in the College’s inclusive STEM initiatives, so we welcome candidates who would contribute to these programs and have experience working with diverse populations of students. The teaching load is 6 courses per year (which includes credited mentoring for student research projects). A Ph.D. is preferred, and ABD applicants will also be considered.

The College of Wooster is an independent college of the liberal arts and sciences with a commitment to excellence in undergraduate education. We enroll a racially, socioeconomically, and culturally diverse student population of approximately 2,000 undergraduate students, of which 6% identify as Latinx; 9%, as Black/African American; 4%, as Asian; 4%, as multiracial; and 61%, as white. Fifteen percent (15%) of our students are studying on international visas. Twenty-five percent (25 %) are Pell-eligible and 11% are first-generation college students. We are interested in hiring faculty who can contribute to the intellectual vibrancy of the community through culturally relevant pedagogy, curricular diversity, intercultural fluency, and a commitment to ensuring equitable outcomes for racially and ethnically minoritized and marginalized student groups.

Application Instructions

To apply, submit a letter of application, curriculum vitae, unofficial graduate transcripts, one-page diversity statement, two-page statement on your teaching and student research mentoring philosophy, and two reference letters through Interfolio. The diversity statement should speak to how the applicant has engaged and/or expects to engage with issues of diversity and inclusion in the classroom and the curriculum, as well as on campus and in the broader community. Applications received at http://apply.interfolio.com/161559 by March 3, 2025, will receive full consideration.

If you have questions regarding Interfolio, please contact Nat McCoy, Administrative Coordinator, Earth Sciences, at nmccoy@wooster.edu. Questions about the position should be directed to Dr. Meagen Pollock, Chair of Search Committee, at mpollock@wooster.edu.
