The College Preparatory School, an independent high school in Oakland, California, seeks an experienced, full-time English teacher beginning in August of 2025. This position typically entails teaching two sections of 9th or 10th grade English and two sections of 11th/12th mixed grade, semester-long English seminars. A qualified candidate will have:
- A bachelor's degree in English or related field. A teaching credential is not required.
- Experience teaching English at the high school level, facilitating student-centered discussions about literature, and guiding student writing with thoughtful assignments and regular feedback.
- Enthusiasm for working with high school students outside of the classroom as part of our advising system and other programs.
- Demonstrated cultural competence.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Patience, flexibility and a good sense of humor.
- Enthusiasm for collaboration and a strong sense of collegiality.
A preferred candidate will have:
- An advanced degree (MA or PhD) in English, Education, or related field
- Experience teaching a broad range of texts, comprising diverse voices, genres, and eras.
- Expertise in 9th and/or 10th grade student development and learning needs in English
- Interest in developing 11th and 12th grade seminars that contribute to the diversity of offerings in our program.
- Interest in future administrative opportunities including department headship
The College Prep English program is innovative and rigorous. It includes two year-long foundational courses: English I (in the 9th grade) and English II (in the 10th grade), followed by two years of semester-long elective English seminars for students in the 11th and 12 grades. English seminars past and present have included thematic courses, such as Hyphen: Asian-American Literature, LatinX Literature, Environmental Literature, Seafaring Literature, and Afrofuturism, or period-specific courses such as 19th century Russian Literature, The Harlem Renaissance, and Shakespeare's Comedies. English teachers work closely with one another, team-teaching foundation courses and continually honing and reshaping the curriculum. Each member of the department develops seminars that draw upon their literary expertise and academic interests.

Faculty at College Prep are compensated according to a step scale based on years of experience that ranges from $74,000 for teachers with no prior relevant experience to $148,000 for teachers with 44 years of prior experience.
