Classification: Part-Time; 25 hours/week (10-month position - M-F 1:45pm – 6:45pm; some weekends and school breaks)                          
Pay Rate: $17.00/hr 
                                                                                                                    
Summary
Under the direct supervision of the Coordinator of Youth Services, the After School Educator leads, implements, and monitors after school programs for assigned groups of youth, in accordance with the direction of the youth department. This is a 10-month position. Successful completion of the 10 months will make the After School Educator eligible to work full-time in the summer camp program from June through August each year.

Job Duties
  • Lead, implement and monitor youth development programs, including components related to leadership, health and wellness, artistic/cultural development, academic enrichment, college/vocational exploration, civic engagement/community service, and personal/social development.
  • Promote cooperative learning skills among youth participants.
  • Maintain and secure accurate student data records for assigned group of youth.
  • Encourage parent/guardian participation in classroom activities and other related events/functions.
  • Gather all instructional materials required for the classroom curriculum.
  • Implement evidence-based conflict resolution and negotiation strategies to support participating youth.
  • Attend mandatory professional development workshops, trainings, and conferences; some mandatory trainings may occur on weekends and school breaks.
  • Understand and implement project-based learning, effective classroom management, and positive youth development concepts.
  • Research and apply youth development strategies to enhance program implementation.
  • Document occurrences throughout the program day and promptly notify supervisor.
  • Work as part of a team to plan special events based on program themes.
  • Monitor and reply to agency emails on a daily basis, ensuring receipt of pertinent documents and correspondences.
  • Serve as a positive role model for youth
  • Maintain positive and professional interactions with key stakeholders of the program and the agency.
  • Review and have a basic understanding of School-Age Child Care regulations.
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS) regulations required of a staff member working in a NYS-registered program.
  • Complete at least 15 hours of training within the first six (6) months of employment and a minimum of thirty (30) hours of training in a 2 (two) year period, and all other trainings mandated by NYS OCFS.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Knowledge, Skill and Abilities
  • Demonstrated reliability with consistent attendance.
  • Proven accountability to oneself, staff, and program youth.
  • Commitment to the division’s strategic plan and vision.
  • Strong multi-tasking abilities and effective time management skills.
  • Experience creating and implementing lesson plans that incorporate youth voices, covering areas such as social-emotional development, physical activity, leadership, health & wellness, STEM, arts and culture, or other positive youth development competencies.
  • Knowledge of youth developmental stages and experience developing youth programs.
  • Understand the development of curiosity, initiative, and problem-solving skills in youth.
  • Work collaboratively as a team member in an after-school program setting, coordinating with multiple staff members.
  • Adherence to the agency’s dress code for youth workers.
  • Support for management policies and procedures and cooperation with other employees.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to relate and interact with diverse youth coming from different social, economic, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, and Excel).

  • Must be able to physically perform stooping, kneeling, walking, lifting, grasping, pulling, standing, talking, hearing, running.
  • Must be able to perform light work exerting up to 30 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
  • Must possess the visual acuity to perform extensive reading, monitor children’s activities, and complete records.
  • Must be able to occasionally participate in sports and physical activities.
  • Employees may be required to travel short distances
Qualifications
  • Accepted: High School Diploma or equivalent with at least two (2) years of direct experience working with children under 13 years of age.
  • Preferred: Associate Degree in Childhood Education, Social Work, Recreation, or a related field with no additional experience required.
  • Complete and submit medical clearance, a tuberculosis (TB) test, and all required health forms from a licensed medical provider prior to starting work in the program and every two (2) years thereafter.
  • Must be cleared through an employee background fingerprint review and the NY State Central Registry.
  • Certification in CPR/First Aid is highly desired.
  • Must possess a valid NYS driver’s license and have reliable transportation.
