Mission Statement
The mission of the Community Survival Center is to relieve hunger in our community by
providing emergency food to individuals and families in times of need.
The Organization
The Community Survival Center is a non-profit, charitable organization recognized under
section 501(c)(3) of the IRS code and located in the Indian Orchard neighborhood of
Springfield, Massachusetts. The Center’s operations are supported by financial donations
as well as the sale of donated items in the Thrift Shop. As well as the shop, which is open
Monday through Thursday and the first Saturday of each month from 9:00 to 3:00, there
is an Emergency Food Pantry. The Pantry provides bagged groceries, up to six times a
year, to low-income households from Ludlow, Wilbraham, and Hampden, as well as the
Indian Orchard, and Sixteen Acres neighborhoods of Springfield. Senior clients may
reside anywhere in Hampden County and visit the Pantry each month. Families enrolled
in the Preschool Program also visit the Pantry every month to collect 20 breakfast, lunch,
and snack items for their children who are not yet enrolled in school.
Position Description
Under the guidance of the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible for
the overall management and operation of the Center, in keeping with the mission. The ED
provides leadership and vision to ensure the stability of the organization and meet the
changing needs of the individuals and families served.
Responsibilities
Provide management oversight of the Center’s programs including Emergency Pantry,
Preschool Program, Senior Outreach Program, the Thrift Shop on Main, and Donation
Coordination.
Develop, recommend, and implement operating plans that ensure the ongoing viability of
the programs. Evaluate organizational performance and take corrective action when
necessary.
Ensure that the organization is appropriately staffed to operate effectively and efficiently.
Assure that all human resources practices, policies and records are following federal and
state laws. Evaluate staff, recommend salary increases, and manage disciplinary issues.
Produce and maintain accurate and timely financial and statistical records and reports;
prepare budgets and monthly reports for the Board; accounts payable and receivable;
payroll; cash management; assure proper financial controls are in place
Identify and solicit funding sources and income producing activities to keep the Center’s
programs running. Write and submit effective grant requests.
Create networks of support to generate interest and encourage community involvement.
Represent the Center as spokesperson. Participate in ongoing public relations and
networking within the communities served, including businesses, schools, government
and similar agencies; area faith-based organizations, groups, and individuals.
Cultivate, communicate with, and maintain community and donor relationships; keep all
social networks up to date; produce periodic press releases, newsletters, and information
pieces to sustain these relationships.

Effective communication and presentation skills, at work and in the community
Problem solving, conflict management, and crisis intervention abilities
Knowledge of fund raising, grant production, and administration
Strong computer literacy including experience with social media, data management
and spreadsheet development
Education and experience level commensurate with responsibilities of the position
Experience working in a nonprofit organization, especially in a food pantry;
knowledge of grant procurement and administration
Requirements
Professional, well developed interpersonal and management skills are essential for
projecting the mission of the Center within the communities served, as well as with staff,
vendors, visitors, donors, and clients
Proficiency with computer software applications and social media
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret financial reports, procedures, and regulations
Ability to effectively communicate; to present information to diverse audiences; to
respond professionally to inquiries and complaints
A valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle
Ability and willingness to attend occasional evening and weekend events
Willingness to pitch in as needed; may include lifting, moving, or pushing heavy objects;
sitting and standing for periods of time

Salary- 60,000 negotiable
