Elementary Band Director / Instrumental Music Teacher

Description Position Function / Job Purpose : Teach and manage the overall program of elementary band in the Wilmington Public Schools. Instruct 4th and 5th grade students about proper instrument handling (care, assembly, cleaning) and provide sequential instruction in instrument skills and music reading. Provide students with opportunities to participate in homogeneously grouped lessons, full ensemble rehearsals, concerts, parades, and other performance opportunities aligned with department, district, community, and state expectations and requirements.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Recruit and instruct elementary school instrumental students, including an introductory parent evening meeting.
  • Schedule and teach 45-minute small group rotating pull-out instrumental lessons to enrolled band members in grades 4-5.
  • Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for individual student differences, adapting music when necessary.
  • Direct and conduct 4th grade Beginning Band and 5th Grade Advanced Band.
  • Schedule and direct up to 6 concerts and one Memorial Day Parade per year.
  • Establish and enforce performance requirements and verify each student's eligibility to participate in band events.
  • Plan and direct band performances at extracurricular and community events including the Memorial Day Assembly.
  • Maintain an active Band Google website.
  • Obtain and use evaluative findings (including student achievement data) to determine program effectiveness and ensure that program renewal is continuous and responds to student needs.
  • Present subject matter according to guidelines established by the Massachusetts DESE.
  • Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and support needs of band students.
  • Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal assessment.
  • Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
  • Apply and enforce student discipline in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
  • Recommend policies to improve the program.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintain current inventory of all fixed assets within the department including school-owned instruments and the band library.
  • Oversee process of cleaning, repairing, and storing all school-owned band equipment.
  • Ensure that programs are cost-effective, and funds are managed wisely.
  • Compile budgets and cost estimates based on documented program needs.
  • Develop and implement plans for instrumental music programs and show written evidence of preparation as required.
  • Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers.
  • Recruit and coordinate parent volunteers and collaborate with Band Parents booster group on annual fundraiser and other events.
  • Maintain professional relationships with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Maintain continued personal professional development.
  • Additional opportunities for working with the Middle School Jazz Band and High School Marching Band are available.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Piano accompanying.
  • Knowledge of overall operation of an instrumental music program, music education, and instrumental pedagogy for instructing elementary students including those with additional support needs and facility using music software.
  • Dispositions include providing consistent, fair and policy-based direction to students; maintain confidential and sensitive information; communicate effectively with individuals of varied cultural and educational backgrounds; communicate in oral and written form.
  • The successful candidate will be an eager and enthusiastic teacher seeking experience working in a community that places a high value on and is passionate about music education in our schools.

    EXPERIENCE PREFERRED :

    Experience working with large groups of elementary aged children.

    Base Pay Range

    The minimum salary is $51K and the max salary is $82K. $51K – $82K / yr (Glassdoor est.) $65K / yr Median Wilmington, MA
