Description

Under supervision, to perform the more difficult and complex nursing assistant tasks relating to the care and treatment of patients.

Current full-time and part-time vacancies are located at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, O'Connor Hospital, DePaul Health Center, and St. Louise Regional Hospital. However, the eligible list may be used for future vacancies as they occur and for extra help positions.

Please Note: Applicants who meet the employment standards will be invited to take an in-person examination tentatively scheduled the week of July 17, 2023. The exam date(s) may change based on the number of applicants.

Typical Tasks

  • Assists in the admission, transfer and discharge of patients;
  • Percusses, and/or vibrates, patients as directed;
  • Positions, holds and/or restrains patients during medical procedures;
  • Performs neurological checks and records results;
  • Observes and reports patient's condition, status and/or attitude;
  • Assists patients in passive range-of-motion exercises;
  • Assists with application, removal and replacement of protective, comfort, and therapeutic devices (i.e., prosthesis);
  • Performs simple tests (e.g., specify gravity, stool guaiac, sugar-acetone) and records results; (which are not charting nurses notes);
  • Assists physician or nurse in special procedures (i.e., lumbar punctures, circumcisions, I.V. 's, dilation and curettage, vaginal exams, incomplete abortions, minor suturing, ulcer debridement, etc.);
  • Assists in providing oral suctioning and colostomy care;
  • Assists in catheter instillation and irrigation;
  • May perform simple checking and monitoring of health maintenance equipment and machines;
  • Performs "isolation" techniques;
  • Maintains, sterilizes, counts and prepares instruments and materials for medical/surgical procedures;
  • Guides or assists in orienting new Hospital Services Assistant staff, and/or volunteers, etc. to a particular unit;
  • In addition performs duties of the Hospital Services Assistant I; and
  • Performs other related work and comparable duties as required.

Employment Standards

Sufficient training, education or experience to have demonstrated practical application of, and success in the following knowledge and abilities. As an example: the equivalent to successful completion of four years of high school and one (1) year experience as a Hospital Services Assistant I or comparable classification, including training in critical patient care.

Knowledge of:

  • Basic nursing practices and of the various types of materials and equipment relating to patient care and their application;
  • Relevant medical terminology;
  • Principles of asepsis;
  • Isolation techniques;
  • Basic communication skills;
  • Patient observation skills;
  • Record keeping practices;
  • Operation, maintenance and simple calibration of specialized related equipment.
Ability to:
  • Perform a variety of routine and complex patient care services and assist in simple and more difficult treatments;
  • Understand and follow written and oral instructions;
  • Stand and walk for long periods and exercise a moderate amount of physical exertion and manual dexterity in the handling of patients or equipment;
  • Get along well with others;
  • Provide direct patient care;
  • Maintain complex and accurate records;
  • Orient others in area procedures;
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing;
  • Operate and maintain related equipment;
  • Work quickly and accurately with minimal direct supervision;
  • Organize and prioritize workload assignment;
  • Follow-through with assignments.
Desirable Qualities:
  • Ability to be patient, understanding and tolerant;
  • Ability to endure illness, death and other unpleasant aspects of the job.

Salary : $50,100 - $63,500
