Under administrative direction, to plan, develop, manage and evaluate programs and projects which provide for the direct maintenance of the County Regional Park System and to assist the public in the use of County parks and recreation facilities and resources.


The Manager of Park Maintenance Services is responsible for the direct maintenance needs of all 28 Santa Clara County regional parks. The Manager of Park Maintenance Services works in collaboration with the Manager of Park Ranger Operations and other Parks personnel to ensure the Department meets the regional recreation, trail, and natural area needs of the public to achieve the vision of the parks system, through excellent customer service, high standards, budget acumen, employee recruitment and selection, data analysis, and the use of leveraged resources.


Typical Tasks

  • Develops, recommends, evaluates and modifies plans, procedures and policies for the administration, management and operation of the Maintenance Division of the County Regional Park Maintenance Program.
  • Reviews recommendations for personnel resource needs and the allocation of staff required to reach Division objectives;
  • Prepares and presents the annual budget recommendations for the Maintenance Division;
  • Monitors evaluates and resolves issues and concerns of public safety and customer service within the County Regional Park system as related to maintenance of facilities;
  • Analyzes incident reports and other data relating to maintenance of grounds and facilities modification; develops strategic plans and implements solutions to problems;
  • May assign and supervise the work of subordinate classes and other personnel assigned to the unit;
  • May conduct formal and informal training for maintenance unit in such areas as: educational and safety programs; first aide techniques; departmental practices, policies and procedures;
  • Provides assistance in emergency situations at their unit(s) or other park locations;
  • Prepares written and oral reports;
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Employment Standards

Education: A four (4) year degree from an accredited college or university in environmental resources, natural resources, park management, recreation management or a closely related field.

Experience:Two (2) years equivalent to a Park Maintenance Supervisor within the Santa Clara County Parks and Recreation Department.

Education: Responsible experience in the maintenance, development or protection of a park, forest, public recreation, or historical area may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis when accompanied by college courses equivalent to completion of a two-year college degree in environmental resources, natural resources, park management, recreation management or a closely related field from an accredited community college.

Experience: Four (4) years in the management, operation, or protection of a park, forest, public recreation, or historical area, including at least two (2) years in the performance of duties equivalent to those of the Park Maintenance Supervisor of Santa Clara County Parks and Recreation or private sector.

Special Requirements:
  • Possession of a valid California driver's license.
  • Willingness to work weekends, holidays or other irregular hours and to conform to department uniform standards.
  • Requirement to obtain any licenses and/or certificates required to perform the typical tasks listed above which are required by the State, Federal and other government agencies.
  • Possession of a First Aid and CPR for the First Responder certificate issued by the American Red Cross before completion of the probationary period.

Knowledge of:
  • Methods of administrative problem solving;
  • Principles of organization and administration of fiscal, personnel and related aspects or park program management;
  • Principles of employee supervision, counseling, disciplinary actions and training;
  • Principles and practices of natural resources conservation, park management, park maintenance, fleet operations and warehouse operations;
  • Principles and practices of first aid and safety;
  • Laws of the Federal, State and County ordinances as they pertain to Santa Clara County Parks and Recreation department.
  • Public relations practices.

Ability to:
  • Plan, organize, control and evaluate the maintenance division program;
  • Develop, recommend and present maintenance division goals and objectives within the context of departmental policies and priorities;
  • Develop and implement short and long range budget plans that accurately reflect maintenance division needs;
  • Plan, assign, and supervise the work of others;
  • Read, interpret and enforce laws and regulations in accordance with County policy;
  • Maintain records and prepare clear, complete and concise reports;
  • Evaluate situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action;
  • Speak and write effectively and clearly;
  • Deal effectively with the public;
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with the public and other agencies.
