Description

Under direction of the Director, Critical Care and Operating Room Services or the Director, Ambulatory Nursing and Operations, to manage the Emergency Department on a 24 hour basis.

Santa Clara Valley Medical Center
- SCVMC is a full-service tertiary acute care teaching hospital with 699 licensed beds providing a wide range of specialized services, including Rehabilitation, Burn, Trauma, and NICU. SCVMC was ranked by U.S. News and World Report as #6 Rehabilitation Hospital in the nation and #1 in the West and designated as a 2024 High Performing hospital for Maternity Care, Heart Failure, Stroke, Hip Fracture, and Pneumonia.


O'Connor Hospital
- O'Connor Hospital (OCH) is a 358 licensed bed acute care facility offering a full range of inpatient and outpatient medical, surgical and specialty programs to residents of Santa Clara County. It was founded in 1889 as one of the first hospitals in the county. OCH has grown significantly over the past five years in both its inpatient volume and its Emergency Department visits. Along with these volume increases other ancillary and clinical departments like imaging, lab, pharmacy, and respiratory have seen growth as well.


St. Louise Regional Hospital
- Since 1989, St. Louise Regional Hospital (SLRH) has been caring for the residents in Santa Clara and San Benito Counties, offering a wide range of inpatient and outpatient medical specialties. SLRH has 93 beds, is a Designated Primary Stroke Center, and is the only acute care hospital in the area. Located in Gilroy, SLRH maintains a CALSTAR 2 emergency helicopter base on the premises.

Typical Tasks

Assessment:


  • Analyzes utilization of staff and distribution of workloads with respect to organization, fiscal management, and social, political, professional and specialization trends in nursing practice within area of responsibility;
  • Assesses and identifies the educational needs of staff as well as the quality of nursing care delivered, as these relate to nursing care standards;
  • Identifies situations requiring corrective action and organizes, analyzes and presents appropriate documentation.

    Planning:
  • Develops staffing patterns that provide for quality patient care;
  • Collaborates with the Director, Critical Care and Operating Room Services or the Director, Ambulatory Nursing and Operations to influence institutional goal setting by identifying and communicating problems, pressures and trends;
  • Collaborates with appropriate levels of nursing staff to determine policies and procedures to be used within nursing;
  • Collaborates with other nursing staff in planning and executing approaches to nursing process in response to changing needs;
  • Participates in long range planning and establishes goals and objectives to facilitate the delivery of quality patient care;
  • In collaboration, plans a systematic approach to staff development for the purpose of recruitment and retention;
  • Assists in the development of a budget to support the established clinical care standards.

    Implementation:
  • Participates in the process of identification, supervision, and implementation of departmental goals;
  • Facilitates the formulation of patient care standards;
  • Uses systematic methods to resolve patient care and nursing problems; initiates planned change, evaluates outcomes, and implements corrective action through conscious, deliberate and collaborative efforts;
  • Participates in resolving unusual or complex interdepartmental problems as they relate to the delivery of quality nursing care;
  • Serves as mediator for personnel concerns which cannot be resolved at a lower level in the nursing organizations;
  • Facilitates communication between departmental staff;
  • Meets regularly with medical staff to share information and problem solve;
  • Participates in directing and implementing policies and procedures for appointment, transfer, and termination of personnel;
  • Participates in selection of candidates for available position through initial interviews based upon the specific technical and psychosocial competencies required on individual nursing unit. Determines skill level and compatibility with health care team through personal interview and other means;
  • In collaboration with Clinical and Administrative staff developers, implements and evaluates orientation programs;
  • Participates in development and teaching of leadership and management skills;
  • Assists in implementing the most cost-effective utilization of staff;
  • Promotes compliance with Federal, State and local regulatory standards, and J.C.A.H.O.;
  • Collaborates with the Director, Critical Care and Operating Room Services or the Director, Ambulatory Nursing and Operations to identify need for corrective action of an employee and initiates action when necessary.

    Evaluation:
  • Periodically reviews organization structure, policies and procedures to enhance administrative effectiveness and support goal attainment of the clinical programs;
  • Directs and implements utilization of nursing care evaluation tools;
  • Participates in the evaluation of the delivery of support services necessary to facilitate quality nursing care;
  • Reviews incident reports to identify and correct common problems;
  • Annually evaluates own personal performance and job satisfaction based on attainment of goals.

Employment Standards

Possession of a valid license as a Registered Nurse issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing.

Possession of the knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.

Relevant education, training and experience and demonstrated current competence in the nursing care of the patient requiring emergency diagnostic and therapeutic services would typically be obtained through:


  • Training and experience in the care of emergency patients (CA Title XXII, Section 70455 (c) requirement);
  • A minimum of two years of recent emergency room experience;
  • A minimum of two years of progressive nursing management experience;
  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree in nursing and a master's degree in nursing or a management discipline, or
  • Equivalent combination of training and experience.
