POSITION SUMMARY
The Learning Specialist is responsible for providing academic support to all Culinary Institute of America (CIA) students, assisting Learning Strategies in accommodating the growing population of students with special needs and accommodations, academic action plans and overall learning support. The Learning Specialist helps to prevent students with documented disabilities from being placed on academic probation or academic suspension, supports at-risk students (especially students with learning disabilities), and works in service of increased retention.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Works with students, faculty and the Learning Strategies team to create strategies that promote a greater chance of academic success.
- Implements intervention and advising strategies for teachers and students alike.
- Addresses poor habits relating to time management, lack of motivation, academic deficiencies, and issues with goal setting.
- Encourages students to develop a systemic approach to studying that will serve them throughout their time at the CIA.
- Helps teachers and other staff in the identification of students who would benefit from intervention.
- Utilizes effective tutoring strategies to help students correct their issues with learning.
- Establishes collaborative relationships between students, teachers, parents, administrators, and Career and Academic Advisors.
- Offers strategy instruction and academic coaching to all students, with a primary focus in students who have learning disabilities.
- Assists students in integrating effective study and learning strategies to promote independent learning and maximize the student’s potential for success.
- Engages in one-on-one, pair, or small skill-building workshops.
- Participates in the training of peer tutors in matters relating to the tutoring of students with disabilities, in cooperation with the Assistant Director.
- Develops a familiarity with the technology and software available in the Learning Strategies Center, and integrates both high and low-tech approaches in tutoring.
- Engages in daily recordkeeping and reporting associated with tutoring sessions.
- Participates in data collection, information organization, and monthly reporting.
- Engages in on-campus professional development, as attendee and presenter.
- Supports the Office of Disabilities creating reasonable accommodations for students.
- Maintains ongoing communications with instructors and Learning Strategies Center staff (which includes the Director - Academic Support Services, Assistant Director - Academic Support, Testing Coordinator, Disability Specialist, other professional tutors, and peer tutors) in order to discuss, evaluate, and develop appropriate avenues of academic support.
- Determines, tracks progress, and completes yearly goals pertaining to professional development, department and service visibility, and support for students with disabilities.
- Any and all other duties as assigned.
