The Cutting Edge, a premier tree care and landscaping company on Kauai, is seeking a skilled and dedicated Arborist to join our team. The Arborist will be responsible for the care, maintenance, and preservation of trees and shrubs across residential, commercial, and public properties. This role requires expertise in tree biology, pruning techniques, and hazard assessment, as well as a commitment to safety and environmental sustainability in Kauai's unique tropical ecosystem. The ideal candidate will have a passion for arboriculture and a strong work ethic in a dynamic, outdoor environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Tree Care and Maintenance:
- Perform skilled pruning, trimming, and shaping of trees and shrubs to promote health, safety, and aesthetics.
- Conduct tree health assessments to identify diseases, pests, structural issues, or environmental stressors.
- Apply treatments, such as fertilization, pest control, or soil amendments, to improve tree vitality.
- Perform tree planting, transplanting, and staking as needed.
- Hazard Tree Assessment and Removal:
- Identify and evaluate hazardous trees or limbs that pose risks to people, property, or infrastructure.
- Safely remove trees or branches using rigging, climbing, and aerial lift equipment.
- Operate chainsaws, chippers, stump grinders, and other specialized tools for tree removal and debris management.
- Safety and Compliance:
- Adhere to industry safety standards, including ANSI Z133 safety requirements for arboricultural operations.
- Ensure proper use and maintenance of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety gear.
- Follow local regulations and permitting requirements for tree work on Kauai, including protected species and conservation areas.
- Participate in safety meetings and training sessions to maintain a safe work environment.
- Environmental Stewardship:
- Protect and preserve Kauai's native and endemic tree species, such as koa, ohia, and hala, in accordance with conservation guidelines.
- Minimize environmental impact during tree care operations, including proper disposal of green waste and debris.
- Educate clients on sustainable tree care practices and the importance of preserving Kauai's unique ecosystem.
- Client Interaction and Communication:
- Consult with clients to assess their tree care needs and provide expert recommendations.
- Explain arboricultural practices, treatment plans, and safety considerations in a clear and professional manner.
- Maintain positive relationships with clients, property owners, and community stakeholders.
- Equipment and Tool Management:
- Operate and maintain arborist tools and equipment, including chainsaws, chippers, aerial lifts, and rigging systems.
- Perform routine inspections and maintenance of equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation.
- Report equipment malfunctions or repair needs to the Tree Care Manager.
- Team Collaboration:
- Work collaboratively with other arborists, ground crew, and landscaping staff to complete projects efficiently.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to junior team members or apprentices.
- Assist with other landscaping or maintenance tasks as needed.
Qualifications
- Required:
- Certified Arborist credential from the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) or equivalent certification.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in arboriculture, tree care, or a related field.
- Strong knowledge of tree biology, pruning techniques, and pest/disease management.
- Experience with tree climbing, rigging, and aerial lift operations.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record (CDL preferred).
- Ability to operate and maintain arborist tools and equipment safely.
- Excellent physical stamina and the ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Preferred:
- Experience working with Kauai's native and tropical tree species.
- Knowledge of local environmental regulations and conservation practices.
- ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ) or similar certification.
- First Aid/CPR certification.
- Experience operating heavy equipment, such as stump grinders or cranes.

Physical Requirements

- Tolerance for working in outdoor conditions, including heat, humidity, and rain.
Work Environment
- This position is primarily outdoors, with exposure to varying weather conditions, noise, dust, and pollen.
- Work may involve irregular hours, including weekends or emergency call-outs for storm damage or hazardous tree situations.
- Travel across Kauai may be required to service clients at different locations.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $75,000.00 - $100,000.00 per year
