The Dallas World Aquarium (DWA) is hiring a veterinary technician. This position is uniquely suited for individuals interested in general veterinary care of zoological collections, captive breeding and propagation, avian hand-rearing, and application of veterinary medicine in large immersion exhibits.
The technician will be an integral member of the veterinary team and responsible for, along with and under the supervision of our veterinarians, the daily veterinary care of the entire collection which consists of more than 600 different species, both aquatic and terrestrial, and has a strong focus on neo-tropical ecosystems.
Responsibilities:
· Assist in routine, preventative, quarantine, and emergency care
· Prepare for, assist during, and clean up after surgical and anesthetic procedures in the clinic and on zoo grounds
· Provide medical treatments for in/outpatients
· Provide medical care with the veterinarian or via telemedicine
· Perform veterinary diagnostics (fecal exam, venipuncture, etc.)
· Compound, calculate, and dispense medications and treatment forms
· Provide husbandry for animals in the clinic (including daily cleaning of kennels, feeding, and medicating)
· Perform triage medical evaluation for the veterinarian
· Manage inventory stock (medication, equipment, supplies)
· Maintain medication expiration dates
· Maintain facilities cleanliness and stocking for daily use and treatments
· Maintain medical equipment in proper working order
· Maintain clinic, laboratory, pharmacy, medical and husbandry records
· Perform all other duties as assigned by supervisors
Qualifications:
· Must be legally eligible for employment in the U.S.
· Veterinary Technician LVT, RVT, or CVT is preferred. Full time veterinary technician experience as well as experience with exotic/aquatic animals preferred
· Thorough understanding of general disease processes, diagnostics, and prevention programs ideal
· Familiar with the use of medical equipment including radiology, and surgery equipment as well as autoclaves and microscopes
· Candidate must have good observational skills, must be able to maintain a clean and organized environment. Must be able to accept directions and work as a team member with little or no supervision
· Knowledge of Microsoft Office software (Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and ZIMS ideal
· Candidate must be punctual and have good attendance to the scheduled work shift, which will include weekends and holidays
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: From $18.00 per hour
Expected hours: 40 – 50 per week
