Position Overview
Davey is seeking a motivated, self-driven and innovative content creator to join its corporate communications team to contribute to the company’s 115-year-old employee magazine, The Davey Bulletin. This position will function within the corporate communications department, working with managers and field employees across North America to capture stories that reinforce the Davey Company’s mission, vision and core values while aligning with our brand and marketing objectives. This position will be expected to serve as the lead writer for the publication. This role is required to function well while managing individual assignments but also is expected to collaborate and integrate strongly with a team on larger initiatives. It is necessary for this position to excel at meeting deadlines while keeping multiple projects moving forward simultaneously. Attention to detail and exceptional personal and professional organization is a must.
This position will report to our corporate office in Kent, Ohio.

Job Duties
- Interviewing Davey employees in-person, on the phone, on camera, or on teleconference software on a broad scope of topics including but not limited to Davey’s research-driven tree services, grounds maintenance and environmental services provided to clients in the residential, utility, commercial and environmental markets.
- Writing feature stories and news briefs. Writing responsibilities for the Bulletin also include formatting client letter submissions, writing employee retirement, death and birth announcements. Acquiring photographs, portraits and other visual elements, including working with the company photographer to schedule portraits and photos related to Bulletin coverage are included in this responsibility.
- Coordinating internal reviews of final content pieces with subject matter expects, members of the corporate communications team and other employees and project stakeholders as needed.
- Collaboration on campaigns driven by the corporate communications team related to green industry events and initiatives that can include content brainstorming, content creation, content delivery and event support which can include event preparation, set-up, staffing and tear-down. Occasional travel may be required.
- Partnering with an external design vendor to organize each of the magazine’s 6 design layouts per year.
- Overseeing print production elements, including organizing internal mailing lists, coordinating with a printing house for print and delivery, print proofing, and other production elements as needed.
- Assign entry-level writing tasks to an intern or part-time support as available, and edit assigned tasks to ensure consistent voice and tone.
- Familiarization with the internal company style guide, and serving in an intricate role to incorporate updates to the guide as needed.
- Has a degree in journalism, mass communications, public relations, or other similar field.
- Has excellent communication skills.
- Has 3-5 years prior experience in content creation, professional communications, public relations, or journalism roles.
- Is fluent in using InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere and other Adobe photo, video and graphic design editing software, in order to efficiently link-up with designer for editing and review.
- Knows and understands their “voice” as a storyteller.
- Can relay a clear, concise and interesting message.
- Is familiar with AP Style.
- Has working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite, including Excel, Teams, Outlook and Word.
- Is a good note-taker.
- Can accept edits and editor/supervisor feedback objectively.
- Can manage deadline pressure effectively
- Does not rely on an editor for grammatical corrections.
- Is an exceptional proofreader
- Is willing to lend a hand on projects outside their scope of work.
- Envisions growing their responsibilities and developing as a communications professional.
- Has a strong work ethic and is motivated to build a career at Davey.
