Position Overview

The UAM Utility Designer 3 is responsible for planning, designing, verifying locations, inspecting, or otherwise capturing information related to utility and telecommunication assets. This is an intermediate level position and individuals are expected to understand and apply technical information and skills with minimal support. Work assignments involve applying mid-level procedures to solve mid-level or complex challenges. This role provides our utility clients with the services and solutions needed to manage their assets efficiently and effectively by performing the duties described. This position is an individual contributor role, working both in an office and / or in a remote setting.

Job Duties

• Analyze field data using software platforms.
• Record and maintain telecommunication and electric utility infrastructure information.
• Identify and address safety risks and ensure compliance with standards.
• Design aerial and underground utilities, ensuring compliance with standards including : remedy any National Electric Safety Code violations, perform pole loading analysis, incorporate utility specific standards and specifications.
• Optimize designs for cost-effectiveness and safety.
• Transpose the design solution to other software platforms specifically : utilize various CAD programs to complete a 2-D design print, utilize various CU / MU (Compatible / Macro Unit) programs to complete a design estimate, complete cost causation analysis and assign a percentage of incurred construction cost to any involved parties, as outlined by the utility specific specifications, utilize various notification programs to communicate the design work being completed to other involved parties.
• Obtain necessary permits for designs.
• Review and correct data errors in utility databases.
• Develop solutions based on client specifications.
• Communicate effectively with clients to clarify design requirements.
• Resolve design challenges promptly and efficiently.
• Collaborate with others (project managers, supervisors, engineers, other designers, technicians, and administrators) to propose the best infrastructure design solutions.
• Ensure the proper care and maintenance of any vehicle and equipment assigned including regular inspections, maintenance checks, and prompt reporting of any issues to the appropriate supervisor or maintenance personnel.
• Manage document systems and ensure proper filing.
• Respond appropriately to emergencies and report incidents promptly.
• Participate in employee and training events as assigned.
• Travel (10-20%) for on-site job duty training, projects, or meetings.
• Perform additional duties as assigned, adhering to company policies and procedures.

Qualifications

Required : High-school diploma with a minimum of 3 years electric utility or telecommunications industry experience or a Bachelor's degree in engineering (or related technical field) with 1 year of industry experience.

Required : Obtain and maintain professional certificates and licenses commensurate with

project requirements.

Required : Demonstrate proficiency in CAD / Outside Plant Engineering design software, PLA software, Microsoft Office applications, Google Workspace, and data entry.

Required : Strong communication skills including written and verbal.

Required : Perform moderately complex arithmetic computations.

Required : Apply understanding to carry out detailed instructions. Identify, address, and resolve problems involving multiple variables and varied situations.

Preferred : Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related technical field from an accredited college or university.

Preferred : 5 years prior electric utility or telecommunications industry experience.

Preferred : Electric hazard identification, electric equipment identification, or communication equipment identification capability.

Preferred : OSHA 1910.269 qualified training is preferred but will be provided as required by the project (including, but not limited to, use and testing of rubber insulating gloves, electric meter change out, use of insulated measuring sticks, open enclosure methodology, and use of phasing tools).
