JOB TITLE: Building Engineer/First Class Refrigeration Operator
DEPARTMENT: Building Operations
REPORTS TO: Director, Building Operations and Manager, Building Operations
CLASSIFICATION: Full-Time, Non-Exempt, Union
REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY: Museum-Based
SCHEDULE: Monday-Friday, 3:00pm-11:00pm
GENERAL SUMMARY
Under the guidance of the Director, Building Operations and the Manager, Building Operations, the Building Engineer protects the DIA’s valuable art collection, and promotes staff and visitor comfort and safety by ensuring building systems are performing to design and by monitoring the museum environment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Perform visual inspections of all Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) equipment.
- Perform routine inspections and maintenance of all mechanical equipment. Undertake major and minor repairs to pumps, motors, fans, steam traps, regulating devices and HVAC controls, ensuring smooth operation of all building environmental equipment.
- Read, interpret and effectively communicate information contained in blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings and manuals.
- Record maintenance and operations activities in the engineer logbook.
- Monitor water treatment for cooling towers, re-heat loops and chiller water loop.
- Record maintenance and operations activities in the Engineer logbook.
- Apply DIA values to interactions to support a culture of belonging among internal and external stakeholders.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Associates degree in related field required. Two (2) years of training and experience resulting in HVAC Certification and three (3) years of relevant work experience required. City of Detroit first-class Refrigeration Operator’s license and EPA certification is required. Additional years of experience may be substituted for degree requirement.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Ability to identify challenges and opportunities, engage others in their resolution, and recommend appropriate course of action.
- Ability to operate and maintain HVAC equipment.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Direct Digital Controls (DDC).
- Ability to respond calmly and make decisions in urgent and emergency situations.
- Ability to share clear, effective, and professional information through talking or writing.
- Demonstrated skills to prioritize and complete multiple tasks to meet deadlines and goals.
- Ability to work regular weekend, evening, and holiday hours.
- Must be proficient in the latest version of Microsoft Office 365.
- Must have proficiency in the use of remote work technology such as scheduling with, connecting to, and using digital collaboration platforms such as Microsoft Teams.
- Must be able to establish and maintain professional, productive and courteous interactions that promote positive teamwork. This encompasses going beyond giving and receiving instructions and includes but is not limited to (a) performing work activities requiring interacting or speaking with others; and (b) responding appropriately to constructive feedback or suggestions for improvement from a supervisor.

This position requires occasional heavy work, and the ability to independently lift and carry a variety of materials, tools and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs., as well as the ability to manage heavier items with mechanical assistance. Working indoors and outdoors may require exposure to seasonal temperature extremes.
