The Direct Support Professional (DSP) plays a critical role in providing hands-on support and guidance to adults with autism and other neuro-differences at a Skills Enrichment Center. DSPs work directly with individuals to help them develop life skills, social abilities, and vocational competencies, all while promoting independence, dignity, and self-confidence. This role requires patience, empathy, and a passion for making a positive impact on the lives of others.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Client Support and Care:
- Provide direct assistance to individuals with autism in developing personal, social, and vocational skills.
- Assist with daily living activities, including personal care, meal preparation, transportation, and medication management when necessary.
- Support individuals in maintaining personal hygiene and completing everyday tasks, encouraging autonomy and independence
2. Skills Development:
- Facilitate skill-building activities such as communication exercises, social skills training, communication exercises, social skills training and vocational tasks (e.g., computer skills, job readiness, etc.).
- Help individuals achieve personal goals by tracking progress and adjusting approaches based on their unique needs.
- Encourage participation in community activities and social events to foster integration and socialization.
3. Behavioral Support:
- Follow and implement individualized behavior support plans to address specific behavioral challenges and promote positive interactions.
- Use de-escalation techniques when necessary and respond calmly and effectively to challenging behaviors.
- Work closely with behavioral therapists and other team members to ensure consistency in care and support.
4. Collaboration and Communication:
- Collaborate with team members, family members, and other care providers to ensure a coordinated approach to support.
- Maintain accurate documentation of daily activities, client progress, and any incidents in accordance with organizational policies.
- Communicate effectively with clients to foster trust and ensure their needs are understood and met.
5. Health and Safety:
- Ensure the physical and emotional safety of clients at all times by following safety protocols and guidelines.
- Provide first aid or medical assistance when needed, and report any health or safety concerns to supervisors immediately.
6. Professional Development:
- Participate in ongoing training related to autism, communication strategies, and behavioral management techniques.
- Stay informed about best practices in supporting individuals with autism and incorporate new knowledge into daily practices.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Previous experience working with individuals with autism or developmental differences is highly desirable
- Strong communication, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to remain calm and patient in stressful situations.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation (may be required depending on role).
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to life or move individuals as needed and engage in physical activities with clients.
