Known for its picturesque views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and rich agricultural heritage, the site is undergoing revitalization to integrate a regenerative farm operation that enhances guest experiences, supplies fresh produce to its culinary program, and preserves its legacy.
The Dillard House farm will supply fresh, regeneratively grown ingredients to on-site restaurants, catering services, and a farm store while creating interactive agricultural experiences for guests.
Position Summary
The Farm Manager will oversee all aspects of the Dillard House’s agricultural operations, ensuring the farm aligns with regenerative practices, supports the culinary program, and provides an engaging guest experience. This role requires a strong background in farm management, a passion for sustainable agriculture, and the ability to collaborate with a diverse team, including chefs, event staff, and marketing professionals.
Key Responsibilities:
Farm Operations
- Implement a regenerative farm plan, optimizing high-quality valley bottom soils for diverse crop production.
- Manage all aspects of crop cultivation, including planting, harvesting, soil health, pest management, and irrigation.
- Manage all aspects of animal husbandry to be initiated in Phase 2 of farm development including rotational grazing, herd management and health, egg collection, and slaughter coordination.
- Oversee orchard planting, maintenance and enhancement
- Coordinate closely with culinary staff to grow seasonal and specialty crops that celebrate the agricultural heritage of the Appalachian region and align with the menus of the Rock House, Dillard House main restaurant, and catering services.
- Explore and establish production for farm-based products for the gift shop, such as preserves, honey, or dried herbs.
Staff and Resource Management
- Hire, train, and manage farm staff and seasonal workers.
- Oversee the use and maintenance of farm equipment, tools, and facilities.
- Create and manage the farm's operational budget, ensuring efficiency and sustainability.
Guest Engagement
- Manage, Crop plan, and maintain visually appealing showcase gardens and orchards for guest enjoyment.
- Plan and lead experiential farm activities, such as tours, workshops, and interactive demonstrations.
- Collaborate with marketing and hospitality teams to integrate farm experiences into guest offerings.
Collaboration and Reporting
- Work closely with the culinary team to ensure consistent supply and quality of farm produce.
- Partner with the events team to support farm-to-table experiences such as weddings and corporate events.
- Provide regular updates on farm performance, production metrics, and new opportunities to management.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Horticulture, Agronomy, or related field preferred; equivalent experience considered.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in farm management, with a focus on regenerative or sustainable practices.
- Strong understanding of crop planning, soil health, and orchard management.
- Excellent organizational and leadership skills, with experience managing teams.
- Ability to engage with guests and communicate the farm’s vision and operations effectively.
- Proficiency in budget management and farm operations software is a plus.
- Passion for farm-to-table initiatives and connecting agriculture with culinary experiences.
