Summary/Objective:
The Medical Director provides both medical and operational leadership for the Acute Treatment Services (ATS), and medical oversight for our Clinical Stabilization Services (CSS) and Office Based Addiction Treatment (OBAT) Program. They are responsible for the medical, administrative, and fiscal functions of the program. Provides medical leadership for the Acute treatment services (ATS, often known as a “Detox”), a 32 bed unit located in the heart of Boston and renovated completely in 2018.

The Medical Director supervises Addiction Medicine providers which may include physicians and advanced care practitioners, working in collaboration with a Program Director, Clinical Director of Social Work and Nursing Director, who oversee a team nurses, case managers, behavioral health specialists and administrative staff. This position ensures that the program provides services to individuals with high quality care in the ATS setting, in a trauma informed manner, and in accordance with regulatory and Dimock requirements. The Medical Director participates in program strategy; developing policies and workflows; and the recruitment, hiring, evaluation and development of ATS provider staff.

Essential Functions

  1. ­­ Supervises Addiction Medicine providers to ensure high quality patient care, maximizing patient safety, and evidenced-based medical protocols for detoxification services.
  2. Supervises patient care in various phases of treatment including ATS, CSS and the outpatient clinic.
  3. Supervises providers above, as well as provision of patient care. Manages provider scheduling and call coverage for inpatient ATS and OBAT clinic.
  4. Reports directly to and is supported by the Associate Chief Medical Officer.
  5. Participates in timely provider evaluation and competency trainings as required by compliance.
  6. Leads clinical, multi-disciplinary and other staff meetings, including daily rounds, as assigned.
  7. Develops and implements quality improvement initiatives.
  8. Maintains program utilization targets. Works with the ACMO and finance team to meet fiscal goals.
  9. Manages and analyzes pertinent data.
  10. Ensures all regulatory standards are met, including from Dimock, the Massachusetts Bureau of Substance Addiction Services (BSAS), the Department of Public Health, and the Joint Commission.
  11. Assists in grant writing and regulatory reporting, as needed along with other program managers.
  12. Collaborates with other programs in Dimock’s continuum of care, including CSS Program, Residential Recovery Services, outpatient Office based Addiction Treatment (OBAT) clinic with nursing support, outpatient psychiatry, and outpatient primary care clinics.
  13. Liaises with larger organization and regulatory bodies to represent the ATS externally.
  14. Collaborates with staff on admissions, treatment and discharge decisions.
  15. Coordinates with outside providers, including Emergency Rooms and outpatient providers, on clinical matters that require medical communication.
  16. Supervises trainees where applicable, including Addiction Medicine Fellows, on their clinical rotation. May also teach other trainees in medicine, social work, and other fields.
  17. Provides direct care of clients in ATS three days a week, including admission history and physicals, approval of individual protocols, review and approval of current medication and medical consultation as needed throughout client stay with one administrative day a week.
  18. Provides outpatient supervision of provider or coverage of OBAT Clinic as required.
  19. Provides medical oversight and manages occasional patient consultation for our adjacent Clinical Stabilization Services (CSS) unit.
  20. Provides medical direction to the outpatient MAT program in health services, including reviewing clinical protocols. Collaborates with integrated primary care/BH/SUD services to ensure seamless, well-coordinated care experience for both patients and staff.
  21. Other duties as assigned

Competencies

  1. Possesses knowledge of and ability to apply professional medical principles and techniques as pertains to addiction medicine and general medicine.
  2. Possesses effective verbal and written communication skills
  3. Performs in a tactful and professional manner.

Work Environment
This position operates in a clinical setting.

Physical Demands

Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds, with the ability to carry up to 25 pounds. Frequent standing, sitting, walking, and pushing/pulling required.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
100% in person work.

3 days (24 hours) clinical work, 1 day (8 hours) administrative time.

Must be able to take part in rotating on call coverage for ATS which may include some holidays and weekends and ensure unit is always staffed. This may require backup availability.

Required Education and Experience

      1. Medical degree or Doctorate in Osteopathic Medicine from an accredited medical school required. For International Individuals: The equivalent from an international medical school in the case of International Medical Graduates, and evidence of completion of a residency from an ACGME accredited residency program in the discipline for which the individual is being hired at Dimock.
      2. Requires a minimum of three years of experience working with vulnerable populations.
      3. Requires experience working with patients with substance use disorders and in an Acute Treatment Service setting.
      4. Requires at least two years of experience managing programs and a multidisciplinary staff.
      5. Possesses thorough knowledge of pharmacological agents in patient treatment.
      6. Subspecialty training and/or Board Certification in addiction medicine preferred.
      7. Internal Medicine, and Family Medicine primary specialties will be considered.
