Description

The Door is an unparalleled model for youth development, offering a comprehensive range of integrated services within a single site for over eleven thousand New York City youth each year. Our mission is to empower young adults to reach their full potential by providing comprehensive youth development services in a diverse and caring environment. At The Door, youth can access health care and education, mental health counseling and crisis assistance, legal assistance, college preparation services, career development, housing supports, arts, sports and recreational activities, and nutritious meals – all for free and under one roof. By providing participants with our suite of integrated services, we seek to provide young people with the tools, resources, and opportunities they need to successfully transition to adulthood.

The Harm Reduction Counselor will be an important addition to our Community Mental Health team, taking the lead in harm-reduction programming, including trainings on best practices, individual sessions with young people, and facilitating weekly groups.

Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate weekly groups and workshops, implementing a harm-reduction approach
  • Provide trainings to staff regarding best practices on supporting youth struggling with substance use
  • Maintain a caseload of roughly 10-15 young people who want to discuss their substance use and develop treatment plans as necessary
  • Perform mandated reported duties as needed
  • Support with crisis and de-escalation
  • Work directly with young people in instances that require high-level behavioral intervention or support
  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of The Door’s programs and services
  • Collaborate with data and program staff to ensure that program offerings are responsive to client needs
  • Support ongoing referrals to and from The Door and community partners.
  • Document all work as required
  • Ensure that Door members are meaningfully engaged in services and accessing enriching and responsive pro-social opportunities.
  • Work interdepartmentally to ensure that programming is robust, and that appropriate linkages and referrals are made.
  • Other functions and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor

Qualifications:

  • 3 years’ experience in harm reduction services
  • Knowledge of, and ability, to apply positive youth development principles to working with young people
  • Experience with program planning, evaluation, and contract management.
  • Proven track record of effective staff support and supervision and the ability to build and maintain collaborative partnerships.
  • Experience working with LGBT-identified, foster care, immigrant, Runaway and Homeless youth populations.
  • Excellent research, analytical, writing, and presentation skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Proficiency in Spanish, French, preferred.

 

Work Schedule:: Full time, Monday - Friday, 10:00 am - 6:00 pm, 35 hours a week

Salary: $55,000 - $60,000 annually
