As a Tool & Die Technician, some of your essential duties and responsibilities may include:
- Equipment Used: Includes but not limited to cutters, grinding wheels, gauges, micrometer, caliper, digital calipers, punches, dies, computerized tool tracking system, surface grinders, CNC internal/external grinder, CNC mill, CNC/CAD system, CNC lathe, indicators, precision hole gauges, precision finish gauges, radial drills, precision hones, overhead cranes, manual lathes, 2 axis milling machines, band saws, vertical saws.
- Machining parts to measurements as close as .0001". Must possess the manual dexterity to use various equipment and perform operations including measurements on a .0001" scale. Must be able to read and interpret complex drawings and blueprints. Must understand tool tracking and inventory system.
- Ability to select the proper cutters, grinding wheels and other tools based on hardness, machinability, and other properties of the materials to be machined. Fabricate shims, polishing and grinding materials, hand manipulating radii on all carbide tooling using diamond files & stones.
- Ability to operate all machinery commonly found in a Tool Room environment, including but not limited to: CNC internal/external grinders, CNC mill, CNC lathe, lathes, Jig Bore, Jig Grinders, Universal Grinders, lapping and polishing equipment (internal, surface, external), milling machines, shapers, and heat-treating mechanisms. Preferred ability to program and operate computer aided machine (CAM) and software for programming CNC machinery. Must have general understanding of metal characteristics and how they respond toward cutting, heating, and drawing commonly found in metal stamping and deep drawn parts.
- Must possess the ability to assemble/disassemble transfer press tooling, die sets, molds, and their associated tooling. Must maintain a collection of Company tools and possess the manual dexterity to use a wide variety of tools to assemble/disassemble these components.
- Performing other tasks as assigned by Operation Leader. Performs general housekeeping duties. Assist engineering with tool designs as needed. Assist other departments as needed with tool set-up and installation.
- Ability to understand all Metal Forming processes (sequence of operation, components, etc.) and be the technical resource for this area. Responsibilities include, but not limited to: 1) perform product/tooling changeovers, 2) troubleshooting, 3) coaching/training new hires.
- The ability to select metals to be used from a range of metals and alloys, based on properties such as hardness and heat tolerance and be able to operate heat-treating furnaces, to harden, temper and anneal tools made from a verity of heat treatable steels.
- Fitting and assembling parts to make, repair, or modify dies, jigs, gauges, and tools, using machine tools and hand tools. Smooth and polish flat and contoured surfaces of parts or tools, using scrapers, abrasive stones, files, emery cloths, or power grinders. Inspect finished dies for smoothness, contour conformity, and defects all to meet blueprint specifications.
- Ability to perform procedures and operating steps as outlined in Quality Assurance Procedures.
- Understand this position requires use and understanding of technical manuals and job procedures.
- Two to five years of experience as a tool and die maker or machinist with aspirations of obtaining a Journeyman’s Card.
- Experience in using sketches, blueprints, specifications, and models to plan operations for the fabrication repairs and adjustments of dies, tools, and assemblies, ensuring safety and maximum efficiency.
- The analytical ability to apply concepts learned in training programs, on the job training concepts, and ability to read non-complex blueprints to determine the source of, and affect repairs on, mechanical problems.
- Experience in verify dimensions, alignments, and clearances of finished parts for conformance to specifications, using measuring instruments such as calipers, gauge blocks, micrometers, and dial indicators and other instruments commonly found in a Tool Room. Design and built jigs, fixtures, and templates for use as work aids in the fabrication of parts or products.
- Graduate from NTMA, (National Tooling and Machining Association) Technical College or a U.S. Department of Labor Program Tool and Die program consisting of an 8,000-hour apprenticeship.
- Experience with SAP process to enter and track malfunction notifications and spare parts procurement.
- Experience in Transfer Presses
- Ex., U.S. Baird, Waterbury-Ferrel, Platarg, etc.
- Experience in Progressive / Metal Stamping Presses
- Ex., Bruderer, Amada, Aida, Minster, etc.
