The Durham Museum is now accepting applications for the Director of Marketing & PR opportunity. The Director of Marketing and PR is a key leadership role within the Museum, responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing marketing and public relations strategies to enhance the Museum’s visibility, engage the community, and drive attendance and revenue. This role requires a dynamic, organized, and strategic leader who can balance creative and analytical responsibilities while fostering relationships with stakeholders and leading a dedicated team. The Director works collaboratively with other members of the senior team to provide marketing and communications leadership and support to achieve the Museum’s growth and strategic plan initiatives.
Responsibilities:
Marketing Strategy and Brand Management:
- Develop and execute comprehensive marketing plans that align with the Museum’s mission, vision, and goals.
- Build and enhance brand awareness through consistent messaging and innovative campaigns.
- Conduct market research and analysis to identify audience trends, preferences, and opportunities.
- Develop strategies to increase visitation, membership, and revenue through targeted campaigns and promotions.
Public Relations, Media Relations, and Crisis Response:
- Cultivate relationships with media outlets, journalists, and influencers to secure consistent and positive coverage.
- Act as the primary spokesperson for the Museum, representing its mission and programs to the public.
- Create press releases, media kits, and other communication materials to support PR initiatives.
Community Engagement and Networking:
- Foster partnerships with community organizations, local businesses, and civic leaders.
- Represent the Museum at community events, and industry gatherings.
Team Leadership and Project Management:
- Mange a team of marketing and PR professionals, providing mentorship and fostering a collaborative culture.
- Oversee project timelines, budgets, and deliverables to ensure successful execution.
- Coordinate and maintain a comprehensive marketing and events calendar.
Content Creation and Copywriting:
- Oversee the creation of marketing content for the department such as, copywriting, editing, and proofreading for print, digital, and social media platforms.
- Manage a personal workload of projects from conception to execution.
- Ensure all content adheres to brand guidelines and is engaging for target audiences.
- Support the Executive Director and other leaders in the development of speeches, remarks, and other presentations.
Analytics and Performance Measurement:
- Use data analytics to assess campaign performance and audience engagement.
- Generate reports to measure ROI, track trends, and guide future strategies.
- Budget and Resource Management:
- Develop and manage the marketing and PR budget, ensuring optimal allocation of resources.
- Negotiate media buys and vendor contracts to maximize value.
Stakeholder Relations:
- Maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including board members, donors, and partners.
- Communicate the Museum’s mission, vision, and achievements to stakeholders effectively.
- All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in marketing, public relations, communications, or related field, Master’s degree, preferred.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in marketing, PR, or related fields, preferably in the Museum sector.
- Demonstrated expertise in media buying, market research, and analytics.
- Strong project management skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
- Proven ability to lead and inspire a team.
- Experience managing budgets and resources effectively.
- Strong networking and community engagement skills.
- Knowledge of marketing tools, CRM platforms, and analytics software.
- Strategic thinking and problem-solving.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Working Conditions:
- Full-time, exempt position scheduled to work Monday through Friday and during select special events.
- Some monitoring of Museum social media channels after Museum hours.
- Routine periods of sitting, standing, and walking are required.
