Nonprofit Chief Operating Officer

Our client, a national award-winning Houston non-profit dedicated to enriching the lives of children and adults with challenging illnesses, disabilities, or special needs, is seeking a Chief Operating Officer (COO), who will have a key role in leading the organization to accomplish its mission. This executive will be a supportive leader for staff and volunteers as well as oversee operations, financials, human resources, facilities, and compliance. Reporting to the CEO and accountable to the Board of Directors, the COO will take a leadership role in overseeing, reviewing, and improving the organization’s processes, workflows, and procedures. This position will play a key role in preparing the organization for growth and mission impact.


Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

Leadership

  • Lead, motivate, guide, and mentor his/her team of five direct reports.
  • Cultivate a strong and transparent working relationship with the Board and ensure open communication about the measurement of financial, programming, and impact performance against stated milestones and goals.
  • Ability to communicate with a wide range of stakeholders, including the Board of Directors, auxiliary boards, donors, program Partners, staff, volunteers, and program participants.
  • Provide leadership, management and oversight for all operations including fundraising, finance, HR, legal, IT, facilities etc. to achieve business goals.


Operations

  • Establishes, builds consensus, coordinates, and administers an adequate structure for the delivery of effective and efficient administrative operations.
  • Oversee and manage the organization’s disaster recovery plan, ensuring business continuity and rapid responses to emergencies.
  • Developing, maintaining, and improving relationships with more than 65 organizations (“Partners”) the organization collaborates with.
  • Facilitate cross-departmental collaboration and strengthen internal communications with staff throughout the organization.


Financial

  • Together with the Finance Director, the COO is the primary liaison to the President & CEO and Board of Directors.
  • Oversee the financial status of the organization including developing long and short-range financial plans, monitoring the budget and ensuring sound financial controls are in place; set financial priorities accurately to ensure the organization is operating in a manner that supports the needs of the program, staff and mission.

Fundraising

  • Works with Development Director to establish an annual fund development plan with fundraising goals, strategies, action items, timelines, and assigned responsibilities to achieve budgeted goals.
  • Participates directly in fundraising activities, including identifying and meeting with donors and prospective donors to generate support.


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree is required, master’s degree preferred
  • A minimum of ten years successful experience in leadership positions with a nonprofit organization
  • Five or more years leading teams with indirect reports
  • Ability to understand budgeting, finance/accounting and forecasting
  • Ability to travel twenty five percent of their time within Texas, including overnight trips.
  • Must be flexible and willing to attend evening and weekend events after standard working hours
  • Enthusiasm for and commitment to the mission of the organization
