The role :

The Director of Human Resources is responsible for overseeing all aspects of human resources within the hotel, with a focus on managing unionized team members. This role involves strategic planning, labor relations, recruitment, team member development, and ensuring compliance with union agreements and labor laws. The HR Director will work closely with corporate leadership, hotel leadership, union representatives, and team members to maintain a positive working environment while balancing operational needs and union requirements. This position is onsite.

The Edgewater is an independent boutique, one of kind, 223 rooms iconic hotel with 11,000 sq ft of meeting space.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Union Relations Management : Act as the primary point of contact between hotel management and union representatives. Ensure compliance with the collective bargaining agreement (CBA) and resolve any disputes or grievances. Lead negotiations for new CBAs and manage ongoing labor contracts. Advise management on union-related issues, legal matters, and best practices for maintaining positive relations. Provide guidance on handling disciplinary actions, including grievances, arbitrations, and union-related investigations.
  • Team member Relations : Develop and implement strategies to maintain positive team member relations, promoting a collaborative, respectful workplace. Provide leadership in resolving conflicts, addressing team member concerns, and fostering an open-door policy. Lead efforts to improve team member satisfaction and retention through regular feedback, surveys, and team-building initiatives.
  • Recruitment & Staffing : Oversee the recruitment, selection, and onboarding process for both union and non-union team members. Create and implement meaningful onboarding plans including New Hire Orientation Ensure adherence to union hiring practices and maintain appropriate staffing levels to meet hotel operational needs. Collaborate with hiring managers to develop areas of responsibility and implement effective recruiting strategies.
  • Compliance & Legal : Stay current on Federal, State, Local, labor laws, union regulations, and HR best practices to ensure full compliance. ADA, FMLA, WAPFML, Wage and Hour / Employment Law, OSHA, L and I, and Seattle Ordinances. Ensure the hotel’s HR policies and procedures align with federal, state, and local labor laws and collective bargaining agreements. Responsible for all compliance reporting and audits related to HR and union labor issues. Conduct investigations, collaborate on action plans to address issues and solve for ways to mitigate future issues.
  • Training & Development : Design and implement team member training programs to enhance skills, ensure compliance, improve performance, and support leader development. Direct performance management initiatives to drive productivity and guest satisfaction.
  • Compensation & Benefits : Ensure compliance with wage and hour laws in the calculation of overtime, exempt vs. non-exempt status, and meal / break requirements. Oversight over benefit enrollment, eligibility and administration Oversight and management of time away benefits and programs

Health & Safety :

  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, including training, reporting, and incident investigation.
  • Oversee team member safety program and provide resources for maintaining a safe and healthy work environment.
  • Strategic Leadership : Partner with hotel leadership to develop HR strategies that align with the overall goals of the hotel. Use HR metrics and data to inform decision-making and improve overall HR performance. Develop and manage the budget for HR department
  • Salary : $120,000-$145,000 Plus 25% Bonus Potential

    Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources, Business Administration, or related field (Master’s degree preferred).
  • 7 years of progressive HR leadership experience, including at least 3-5 years in a leadership role within a unionized environment (preferably in hospitality).
  • In-depth knowledge of labor laws, collective bargaining agreements, and union-related practices.
  • Strong experience in conflict resolution, team member relations, and labor negotiations.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and lead diverse teams, fostering a positive, inclusive workplace culture.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion and professionalism.
  • Proficiency in HR software and MS Office Suite.
  • Preferred Qualifications :

  • Certification from a recognized HR organization (e.g., SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, SPHR).
  • Previous experience working in the hospitality industry.
  • Knowledge of industry-specific labor union contracts and practices.
  • Bilingual or multilingual
  • Salary : $120,000 - $145,000
