New Country Pride Camp, a specialty program of New Country Day Camp, is a welcoming, open-tent community of LGBTQ young people and staff that celebrates and sustains joyful, outdoor summer experiences where all can thrive. Pride Camp is a 2-week program, creating an affinity space for LQBTQ young people to experience the joy of New Country Day Camp and specialty pride programming related to identify, family, and community. Pride Camp operates M-F, 8am-5pm, and provides transportation for staff and campers to and from our campgrounds on Staten Island via multiple locations throughout Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn. NCDC is a neurodiverse camp community, and all staff members are responsible for supporting neurodivergent and neurotypical campers and staff to have successful summers.

 

JOB PURPOSE

New Country Pride Camp’s Division Supervisor is a passionate, enthusiastic, highly motivated, and conscientious leader who is directly responsible for the well-being of approximately 30 campers (grades K – 8) at New Country Pride Camp, which serves LGBTQ campers and children from LGBTQ families. It is crucial for the NCPC Division Supervisor to have mastery of age-appropriate engagement with campers in topics surrounding LGBTQ identity and community. The supervisor is responsible for ongoing communication with the families of Pride campers and the supervision of the counselors within NCPC. NCPC runs for two weeks from June 27th – July 11th with part-time hours beginning in May.

 

SCOPE OF INFLUENCE

  • Direct client group: Campers (K-8th Grade)
  • Directly supervises: Counselors, Division Assistant, and any assigned Counselors-in-Training
  • Serves as direct contact for families in matters directly related to their camper(s)

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

Camper Care

  • Be responsible for the overall well-being of approximately 30 campers and 6 counselors at a time, including but not limited to physical and emotional needs
  • Maintain organized systems and records of camper and staff attendance, injuries, accidents, and other important information
  • Partner with support staff (mental health professionals) to ensure implementation of ICPs for camper success
 
  • Learn, understand, and promote camp’s mission and values (Personal Growth and Responsibility, Empathy, Respect, Passion), including our Open Tent philosophy of inclusion
  • Work with leadership team to develop and execute special Pride programming, which includes daily activities and an end of session Shabbat celebration
  • Be present at the pool complex for swim periods and support Swim Coordinator

Logistics and Communications

  • Attend pre-camp meetings with families and/or staff as needed
  • Ensure staff/campers follow their daily schedule, guaranteeing each camp day runs smoothly
  • Communicate with parents as needed through the camp season, including being available via email and cell phone until 6:30pm nightly
  • Work with Community Engagement Manager to compile weekly division emails to families with pictures and program updates
  • Write weekly emails to staff detailing important information for the week ahead, with an emphasis on boosting morale and maintaining a positive staff culture
  • Communicate and effectively partner as needed with Support staff, Aquatics staff, Program staff, and NCDC leadership regarding camper needs and concerns
  • With Operations Manager, order supplies for division and maintain an organized inventory and balanced budget
  • Be responsible for overall cleanliness and organization of division shelter and surrounding area

 

Leadership and Staff Supervision

  • As a member of the NCDC Supervisory Staff, model professional behavior for campers and other staff at all times
  • Be present at all days of orientation, camp and staff meetings during the camp season
  • Create agendas and facilitate staff meetings with assigned division staff, as needed
  • Proactively problem solve and motivate colleagues as difficult moments present themselves throughout the camp season; encourage flexibility and understanding as means to achieve common goals
  • Establish and promote a commitment to the mission and vision of New Country Day Camp
  • Partner respectfully with team members on crisis management using a restorative approach, working to provide the proper supports for campers within the division

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

 

Required Knowledge

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, social sciences, liberal arts or equivalent professional experience required
  • 3  years of experience working with elementary school-age children
  • Experience as a leader in an inclusive, educational setting, or similar experience
  • Previous supervisory experience strongly preferred
  • Previous experience working in LGBTQ  oriented spaces and/or with LGBTQ  youth and families
  • Excellent organizational and oral/written communication skills
  • Can attend all days of Staff Orientation and camp starting in early June through July 11th
  • Ability to interact with families, children, and colleagues of diverse cultural and social backgrounds
  • Fast learner with ability to work independently and collaboratively
