Position Overview:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Facility Management:
• Oversee the daily operations of all museum facilities, including exhibition spaces, storage areas, offices and public spaces.
• Develop and implement strategies for maintaining the condition of museum buildings, systems and equipment.
• Direct the maintenance and repair of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and other systems, ensuring they meet safety standards and operational requirements.
• Manage a team of facilities staff, including custodians, maintenance personnel, and third-party security team.
Safety and Security:
• Ensure that the museum complies with local, state, and federal safety regulations and codes.
• Collaborate with Crisis Team to develop and implement emergency preparedness plans and procedures, including fire safety and evacuation protocols.
• Manage the security of the museum’s facilities, working closely with the security team to address any risks or threats.
Budget and Resource Management:
• Develop and manage the facilities department’s budget, tracking expenses and ensuring cost-effective operations.
• Identify opportunities for energy savings and sustainability, overseeing green initiatives such as waste management and environmental impact reduction.
• Source and oversee contracts for external services (e.g., cleaning, maintenance, landscaping) to ensure quality and cost-effectiveness.
Capital Projects and Renovations:
• Work with CEO to lead the planning and execution of capital projects, including building renovations, upgrades and new construction.
• Coordinate with architects, contractors and vendors to ensure projects are completed on time, within budget and to high-quality standards.
• Work with CEO to plan and implement major facility improvements to align with long-term goals.
Collaboration and Leadership:
• Collaborate with museum departments (e.g., curatorial, visitor services, education) to ensure that the facilities support exhibitions, programs, and events.
• Provide leadership and guidance to facilities team members, fostering a culture of teamwork, professionalism and continuous improvement.
• Develop and maintain relationships with external partners, including vendors, contractors, and city and state officials.
Health and Environmental Compliance:
• Ensure that the museum’s facilities adhere to all health and environmental regulations, including air quality, lighting, and pest control.
• Collaborate with the Sustainability Task Force to lead the museum’s efforts related to sustainability, including waste reduction, energy efficiency and green certifications.
Emergency Response and Crisis Management:
• Respond promptly to emergencies, including building damage, system failures, and natural disasters.
• Coordinate with emergency services, insurance providers, and contractors to resolve issues quickly and minimize damage.

Work Environment:
The Director of Facilities will work in a fast-paced, dynamic museum environment. The position may require evening or weekend work, particularly during major exhibitions or events. Travel may be required for off-site projects or professional development.
