JOB SUMMARY
The mechanic is responsible for maintaining and repairing ambulances and support vehicles. Employee reports to the Facilities Manager.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
- Repairs and performs routine and preventative maintenance on ambulances and equipment.
- Inspects vehicles and assures compliance with applicable laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures at all local, state, and federal codes and regulations.
- Monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.
- Performs minor repair work on alternators, brakes, belts, hoses, starters, and windshield wipers; changes tires; performs other maintenance duties.
- Prioritize work orders and maintain a variety of shop and repair records.
Consider factors such as safety and equipment downtime work to minimize repair and maintenance costs and length of downtime, as well as plans and schedules work to ensure equipment is ready for service.
- Maintains parts inventory through electronic system
- Coordinates with outside vendors as needed for service and/or warranty work on ambulances and equipment; verifies that proper repairs were complete.
- Maintains log/records of inspection, preventive maintenance work, repair activities, warranty records, and other documentation: ensures compliance with electronic recordkeeping system.
- Researches repair requirements, preventive maintenance standards, and parts requirements for various vehicles and equipment and maintains an awareness of new parts, procedures, trends, and advances in the profession.
- Drive emergency vehicles to test drive for diagnosis, verify repairs, or pick up or deliver equipment.
- Responds to emergency breakdowns or make service calls to off-site locations after hours, on weekends, and holidays as needed.
- Installs and repairs safety equipment, light bars, spotlights, emergency beacons, communication systems, and related vehicle add-on equipment as needed
- Provides instructions and training on how to use various equipment as needed.
- Communicate with the manager, department personnel, dealers, vendors/service providers, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review the status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
- Demonstrate satisfactory work performance and regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.
- Performs related duties as required.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or General Education Development (GED)
- Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) Level I Certification in Ambulance.
- Instead of EVT certification, consideration will be given to candidates who possess at least six (6) Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certifications.
- Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) Level I Certification must be obtained within one (1) year of hire.
- ASE Certification(s).
- Or One (1) year of heavy equipment mechanic and repair experience. (including the repair and maintenance of fire apparatus, ambulances, and/or police vehicles.) with the ability to take ASE Certification.
- Requires a valid Class E Missouri driver’s license or the ability to obtain and a clean driving record.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

- Ability to operate a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools associated with repairing, maintaining, testing, or driving EMS vehicles and equipment
- Ability to work independently and/or with limited direction, as well as cooperatively in a team environment, while consistently demonstrating collaborative, respectful, and productive work habits
- Ability to read, understand, and follow work orders, shop manuals, and technical specifications; use computerized tools and advanced diagnostic equipment. Analyze the data retrieved using such tools, and detect, analyze, and take the appropriate repair action.
- Knowledge of Disposal and recycling techniques and procedures for hazardous materials, used oils, and other chemicals.
- Knowledge of Gasoline and diesel engines, power trains, and hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical, and electrical systems. As well as air conditioning systems, transmissions, hydraulics, tires, and related components.
- Knowledge of operating characteristics, tools, equipment, and diagnostic testing devices used in emergency vehicle repair and maintenance
- Knowledge of automotive troubleshooting and diagnostic procedures and techniques
- Knowledge of methods and techniques used in maintaining and repairing ambulances and support vehicles
- Skill in effective verbal and written communication.
- Skill in preparing and completing work orders and related reports.
Physical Requirements
- Physical demands include but are not limited to: sitting, talking, hearing, seeing, standing, walking, driving, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, twisting, bending, crawling, climbing, and using hands and fingers to operate tools and equipment and to lift or move objects up to 70 pounds. Visual acuity, speech and hearing, hand and eye coordination, and manual dexterity are necessary to operate several emergency vehicles and equipment.
- Work is performed primarily in an automotive shop environment. There is exposure to moving mechanical parts, noise, vibration, electrical/mechanical hazards, inclement weather, temperature extremes, slippery or uneven surfaces, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, noxious odors, gases, and hazardous materials.
- Work shall be performed with tools, appliances, and equipment approved by those agencies and bodies that have control, authority, or approval of the design working ranges or limitations of those items; the employee has the responsibility to conform to those ranges and limitations.
- Equipment may include but is not limited to: volt ohmmeter, amp meter, gauges, calibrating tools for engines, micrometers and dial calipers, jacks, hoists, presses, scopes, grinders, saws, drills, torches, inspection and diagnostic equipment, AC pump/gauges, computers/laptops, phones and various other shop tools.
