Position Overview
Epiphany Episcopal Church is seeking a dedicated and self-motivated Part-Time Sexton to assist in the care and maintenance of our church campus. The Sexton will report to the Rector and be responsible for building repairs, facility upkeep, and ensuring that spaces are properly set up for worship services and events. This role requires a proactive and dependable individual who can help maintain a safe, functional, and welcoming environment for our congregation and visitors.
Primary Responsibilities
Event & Worship Support
- Assist with the setup and breakdown of tables, chairs, and other equipment for worship services, meetings, and events.
- Ensure the sanctuary and common areas are properly arranged before and after services.
- Open and close the campus every Sunday, ensuring spaces are accessible and secure as needed.
Basic Repairs & Facility Upkeep
- Perform minor plumbing, electrical, and carpentry repairs (e.g., fixing leaks, replacing light bulbs, patching walls, painting).
- Conduct routine inspections of the church buildings and grounds, identifying maintenance needs and reporting larger issues to the church administrator.
- Ensure HVAC systems are functioning properly and adjust thermostats as needed.
- Maintain entryways, walkways, and other common areas to ensure they are safe and free of debris.
- Monitor and replace filters, batteries, and other consumable items in church facilities.
- Manage basic tools and supplies needed for repairs and maintenance.
General Facilities & Security Oversight
- Unlock and lock the church campus on Sundays and as needed during the week.
- Ensure all doors, gates, and windows are secured after events and daily operations.
- Assist with coordinating and overseeing work done by external contractors when necessary.
Qualifications & Skills
- Prior experience in facilities maintenance or general handyman tasks preferred.
- Basic knowledge of plumbing, electrical, and carpentry repairs.
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
- Physical ability to lift at least 50 pounds, climb ladders, and perform tasks that require bending, kneeling, and standing for extended periods.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to troubleshoot maintenance issues.
- Dependability, punctuality, and respect for the church’s mission and community.
Work Schedule & Expectations
- Sundays: 5-hour shift (opening and closing the campus, event setup and breakdown).
- Weekdays: 15 hours, scheduled in coordination with rector.
- Flexibility may be required for special services or events.
- Must be proactive in identifying and addressing maintenance needs.
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $18.00 - $20.00 per hour
Expected hours: 20 per week
