About the Role:
Falmouth Country Club is seeking an Arborist Specialist to oversee the tree care, woodland management, and broader horticulture operations across our golf course and club property. This role will be responsible for preserving and enhancing the club’s tree canopy, maintaining course playability, and ensuring environmental sustainability, while also contributing to our larger horticulture initiatives.
As a key member of the horticulture team, the Arborist Specialist will work under the Head Gardener/Horticulturist and support the Director of Agronomy, playing a vital role in maintaining and improving all plant life on the property with a focus on arboriculture. The ideal candidate has a passion for tree care and forestry, experience in sustainable land management, and a strong understanding of plant health and conservation practices.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the care, health, and maintenance of all trees on the property, including woodland areas, ornamental trees, and course-adjacent plantings.
- Conduct tree health assessments, identifying hazards, diseases, and pests while recommending and implementing treatment plans.
- Perform pruning, trimming, cabling, bracing, removals, and transplanting to improve tree health and safety.
- Oversee new tree selection and planting programs, ensuring alignment with the club’s landscape master plan.
- Assist in maintaining and enhancing all horticultural operations, including gardens, native plant areas, and agricultural landscapes, under the direction of the Head Gardener.
- Manage invasive species control and tree disease prevention efforts.
- Operate and maintain specialized arborist and landscaping equipment, including chainsaws, lifts, chippers, stump grinders, and irrigation systems.
- Develop and execute a long-term tree preservation and replacement plan in collaboration with the Head Gardener and Landscape Architect.
- Provide emergency response for storm damage and fallen trees.
- Work closely with the Golf Course Maintenance Team to integrate arboriculture with turf management.
- Ensure compliance with environmental regulations, local ordinances, and industry safety standards.
- Maintain detailed records of tree maintenance activities, removals, and plant health monitoring.
- Assist in educating staff and members on sustainable tree care, woodland conservation, and the role of trees in golf course ecology.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of a 2-year certificate in Arboriculture required.
- ISA Certified Arborist (preferred) or equivalent professional experience in tree care and maintenance.
- 3 years of experience in arboriculture, forestry, or tree maintenance.
- Strong knowledge of tree biology, disease and pest identification, and best pruning practices.
- Experience with horticulture and general plant care, with a focus on sustainable landscape management.
- Proficiency in operating and maintaining arborist equipment, including chainsaws, chippers, lifts, and climbing gear.
- Experience in tree risk assessment, hazard mitigation, and storm response.
- Ability to work outdoors year-round, in varying weather conditions, and perform physically demanding tasks.
- Commitment to environmental sustainability, conservation efforts, and responsible land management.
- Strong communication and organizational skills, with experience in team collaboration and reporting.
