Position Summary: Provides and maintains an open, loving, cooperative, safe, nurturing environment that promotes learning while supervising children. The Bilingual Lead Teacher should have an instinctive love for this stage of development, and the ability to assist children with their most personal needs such as toileting, washing, and dressing. Individual must possess the ability to do curriculum planning, develop lesson plans, and implement day-to-day classroom instruction.
Consistent attendance is important to the students and the functioning of the classroom. The Bilingual Lead Teacher is expected to follow attendance policies and procedures established by The Family Place for the Child Development Center, as to ensure minimal disruption to day-to-day activities in the classroom.
Key Responsibilities:
CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT:
- Plans and implements weekly activity plans that are developmentally age appropriate to include indoor, outdoor and nature room activities; provides a variety of materials and resources for children to explore, manipulate and use, both in learning activities and in imaginative play.
- Maintains classroom structure by following the Frog Street curriculum according to the specifics provided by The Family Place and the Child Development Center.
- Works collaboratively with Teachers Assistant to attend to incidental cleaning and housekeeping associated with the individual and group activities. Perform cleaning and maintenance necessary to keep the classroom and common spaces clean, sanitized, and safe.
- Keeps the supplies and classroom neat and orderly and maintains a clean and sanitary classroom; organizes and labels materials in a manner that is appropriate for their age and perceptual abilities; sanitizes toys and play equipment.
- Arranges classroom attractively to encourage involvement, experimentation and creativity by the children.
- Sets expectations for the classroom and follows rules and regulations of The Family Place Safe Campus, aka, Sallys House.
- Teaches basic skills such as colors, shapes, numbers, letter recognition and social skills; assesses and observes children and prepares notes on daily observations.
- Observes children for safety and assessment purposes and maintains child assessment records in a portfolio.
- Sterilizes bottles, prepare formula; and changes diapers, if applicable.
- Supervises and guides children during mealtime, toileting, i.e. potty training, hand washing, rest periods and play activities.
- Keeps childrens nose/face clean, shoes tied, clothes changed when dirty.
- Communicates with children using language and tone of voice that is nurturing, kind, and respectful.
- Promotes feelings of security and trust in the children by encouraging and supporting them during day-to-day activities.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT:
- Participates in all staff development activities, in-service trainings, and workshops.
- Completes 24 clock hours of pre-service training as required by child-care licensing by completing 8 hours before working with children and 16 additional hours within 90 days of employment.
- Completes 30 clock hours of annual training as required by care-care licensing and NECPA (National Early Childhood Education Program) and completes the training within 12 months of employment and as directed/required by the Program Director.
- Completes 2 hours of annual leadership training courses as assigned by the Program Director.
- Completes 2 hours of annual transportation safety training by completing the following classes:
- Defensive Driving training class in LMS (learning management system), before driving agency vehicles.
- 15-passenger van safety training class in LMS (learning management system), before driving agency vehicles.
- Maintains current Pediatric CPR and First Aid certification.
ADMINISTRATION:
- Consults with Program Director about concerns/problems with the children before talking to the parents.
- Communicates professionally and regularly with parents, discussing their childs day-to-day interactions as well as any accidents and/or incidents that may have occurred.
- Completes weekly and monthly childrens services on Integrated Tracking System Logs.
- Provides training for teaching assistants and/or volunteers on classroom policy and procedures.
- Performs routine clerical duties such as filling, copying, answering phones and managing the CDC front desk.
- Maintains a positive work environment among all staff and children that is professional, kind, and inclusive.
- Ensures continuity of care for children by sharing with incoming teachers information about each childs activities during the previous shift and any verbal or written instructions given by the parent.
Other Duties: Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
BA/BS in child-related field
OR
AA/AS in child-related field and (1) one year of experience as a teacher.
OR
A national competency-based credential such as the CDA (Child Development Associate) and (2) years of experience as a teacher.
Licenses: Maintains a valid, current and clear Texas Driver’s License.
Certifications:
- Current Pediatric CPR or completed within 90 days of employment.
- Current Pediatric First Aid with Rescue Breathing or completed within 90 days of employment.
- Clear TB skin test.
Knowledge and Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge and understanding of the Texas DFPS guidelines for daycare centers, Educational First Steps, and NAC accreditation standards.
- Bilingual in Spanish
- Knowledge and/or the ability to learn Frog Street Curriculum.
- Knowledge of domestic/family violence and the effects on children and families.
- Ability to successfully pass required Texas DFPS criminal history background check.
- Ability to supervise children at all times and follow child-care licensing guidelines to ensure the safety of the children.
- Ability to maintain positive relationships with children, co-workers and parents.
- Ability to work with children of all ages warmly, calmly and in an unhurried way.
- Ability to plan, coordinate and present material for a classroom.
- Ability to safely drive a Family Place vehicle to field trips, etc.
Mental and Physical Abilities: Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs; Visual acuity is required for child supervision. Repetitive stooping and bending with occasional lifting light to medium is required. Ability to stand and walk for long periods at a time is required, as well as, the ability to run and be able to participate in outside activities
Working Conditions: Ability to work in a busy and occasionally noisy environment. There may be a number of activities and situations happening at once, and the Lead Teacher will have to supervise all children at all times; may experience smells associated with toileting and children who are ill. Work may be performed, but is not limited to a classroom environment.
