Job Description

We are immediately hiring in Rochester! Join us at Easterseals NY for an exciting career as a Full Time Direct Support Professional (7am-3pm)

500 Sign on bonus for successful candidates upon hire

Hourly Rate : $17.50 and will increase to $18.50 after successful completion of all Easterseals NY Rochester required training and associated certifications are obtained.

Position Summary :

Provides personalized care and implements treatment programming goals, behavior plans, and other therapeutic supports to individuals with developmental disabilities in order to foster personal growth and self-directed living in the pursuit of higher levels of independence and personal autonomy and choice.

Essential Job Functions :

  • Attend and professionally participate in family, team, and agency staff meetings, trainings, and professional development. Maintain all required certifications and trainings.
  • Maintain, collect, and report thorough and appropriate documentation including goal tracking, communication logs, behavioral tracking, Restrictive Intervention Applications, and Notable Event Reports.
  • Participate in creating and maintaining a positive work environment, including providing a positive role modeling for residents / students both within and outside of the home and school.
  • Demonstrate appropriate judgement and understanding of client safety while supporting individuals.
  • Provide services to individuals of all genders with varied medical, social, sexual, communication, and behavioral issues. Such behavioral issues may include physical aggression, verbal assault, property destruction, elopement, and inappropriate sexual comments, gestures and / or acts.
  • Utilize SCIP-R physical interventions on an emergency basis for the protection of staff and students.
  • Assist individuals with toileting and personal care needs when necessary, including full support.
  • Ensure the safety of the residence / school, including, by screening that only appropriate and authorized visitors (staff and visitors of the individuals' choice) enter the residence.
  • Manage conflict professionally and timely inform supervisor of any issues or unusual events.
  • Follow through with supervisory requests and seek supervision when unclear about expectations.
  • Immediately STOP any incident of abuse or neglect, provide immediate supports and safeguards, and report the incident to the manager and administrator and, if needed, The Justice Center.
  • Maintain professional ethics and confidentiality in the building and out, regarding the discussion of students, and their conditions.
  • Adhere to the Program and Agency policies.
  • Transport students to and from group residences / school, activities, work, etc. Use of agency vehicle unless given explicit permission by building leader or designee.
  • Maintain safely operating vehicles and immediately cease usage and report any vehicle with maintenance issues.
  • Perform other duties as requested.

Responsibilities - Residency :

  • Embody the OPWDD Core Competencies for Direct Support Professionals.
  • Consistently and faithfully implement approved individual plans, including but not limited to Behavior Support Plans, Individual Plans of Protection, communication protocols, dietary plans, medical plans, Individual Program Plans or Service Plans, and sensory diets, as developed by the team.
  • Provide ongoing daily supervision, attention, care, and support for residents in OPWDD certified homes.
  • Maintain a safe, comfortable environment that provides options for expanding interests and improving opportunities for skill acquisition and community inclusion.
  • Provide supervision and training on daily living skills needed to increase independence.
  • Perform and / or assist with routine household and property tasks including meal preparation, housekeeping, outdoor maintenance, and vehicle safety.
  • Ensure that all individuals have ready access to clean clothing, hygiene supplies, food, activities, bedding, furniture, and personal property. Assist individuals with ensuring the above when individuals are unable or unwilling to assist with or protect those rights themselves.
  • Responsibilities - School :

  • Work under supervision of classroom teacher providing instruction, services, and support to individuals with varied disabilities and behavior issues which may include physical aggression, verbal assault, inappropriate sexual comments, gestures, and / or acts.
  • Assist in educational programming and caring for needs of the students.
  • Assist in keeping the classroom and program supplies ready and well maintained.
  • Upon completion of structured activities maintain an effective level of interaction with students.
  • Maintain a strong knowledge of and consistently and faithfully implement Individual Education Programs (IEP)
  • Assist with behavior management of children as outlined by Behavior Intervention Plans and Program and Agency policies.
  • Effectively and appropriately interact and communicate with classroom and professional team members.
  • Maintain and support a community of learners amongst professional staff and engage in regular self-directed learning to enhance practice.
  • Education and Experience :

  • High School education or GED required.
  • Two (2) years' work experience preferred.
  • Commitment to providing high-quality services to individuals with disabilities in community and residential settings.
  • Able to be medication certified (AMAP) and successfully complete Easterseals NY Rochester required training and obtaining the associated certificates.
  • Able to work flexible hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Valid driver's license for use in regular transportation of program participants.
