The Animal Nutritionist’s primary duty is to formulate feed rations for poultry, cattle, swine and other farm production animals. Through our work we help farmers produce quality livestock and ultimately provide consumers with the healthiest possible food options.
Our recommended livestock and poultry diets must meet or exceed the animal's requirements for health and performance. The feed formulations should be designed to enhance palatability. The Animal Nutritionist is responsible for growing sales of animal nutrition products through ethical promotion of the Fertrell Company.
Animal Nutritionist Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Formulate diets and rations to maximize growth, reproduction, health, and performance of livestock.
- Evaluate the nutritional value of feeds, feed supplements, grains, grasses and forages.
- Research and document the effectiveness of dietary regimes through field trials.
- Develop and present information sessions on animal nutrition topics at trade shows and conferences.
- Identify new uses for existing Fertrell products and propose new product ideas to meet the changing needs of farmers.
- Maintain expertise in nutritional trends and keep up-to-date with regulatory changes.
- Educate others in the organization to promote the use of Fertrell products.
- Communicate with clients to understand their goals and the specific needs of their markets.
- Convert nutritional recommendations into product sales.
- Promote the benefits of organic and sustainable livestock production.
Animal Nutritionist Qualifications
- B.S. in Dairy Science, Animal Science, Animal Nutrition, or similar.
- Ability to effectively manage deadlines.
- Excellent organizational skills are required to document and archive animal nutrition records.
- Effective presentation skills—both verbal and written.
- Good mathematical skills needed for interpretation of lab reports and calculation of feed formulations.
- Basic computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office software—Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
- Willingness to work a flexible schedule including overnight travel.
- A belief in organic and sustainable agricultural practices.
- Respect for multiple cultures, appearances, and beliefs.
- Upbeat, personable attitude with genuine eagerness to be successful.
- Farming experience of any kind is desirable.
- Visibility of the position requires maintaining a professional appearance consistent with client expectations and providing a positive company image.
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
Working Environment for the Animal Nutritionist
This is a Bainbridge, PA position, but requires frequent travel throughout the U.S.
Physical Requirements of the Animal Nutritionist
- Ability to sit or stand at a desk throughout the day, doing computer and typical office work.
- Ability to spend long hours traveling in a vehicle.
- Physical condition to allow walking fields, often on uneven ground, with growers.
- No known allergies to animals, as farm visits and contact with livestock are part of this position.
- Ability to lift up to 60 lbs. occasionally
