The Foote School seeks a talented, energetic individual to join its faculty as a middle school (grades 6-8) Humanities teacher.
The Foote School is an independent K-9 co-ed day school in New Haven, Connecticut. We aim to endow students with timeless values while providing thoughtful experiences that will prepare them to learn, lead, and grow in the 21st century. The Humanities program at the Foote School reflects the principles that are at the core of the school’s mission. The successful candidate will be a nurturing, flexible person with a strong background in Humanities (or English or History) instruction and an understanding of the developmental needs of children. They should be able to communicate effectively with students, parents, and peers, as well as be able to employ a variety of instructional techniques to engage adolescent learners. The successful candidate will have a commitment to our school’s mission, to working collaboratively with others, and to upholding the values of the school community.

Essential Duties and Requirements:
- Plan and present lessons.
- Prepare and administer regular and varied assessments of student learning.
- Complete narrative trimester reports of students' learning and recommendations as needed.
- Communicate effectively in support of each student with their parents, advisor, and other teachers.
- Serve as a student advisor and homeroom teacher.
- Serve as an advisor (or co-advisor) to one or more student clubs or activities.
- Performance of other duties as may reasonably be assigned by the School
Professional Skills and Personal Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in English, History, or a closely related field; master’s degree preferred.
- Minimum of 3 - 5 years experience teaching middle school English, History, or Humanities, including advanced classes.
- A familiarity with age-appropriate literature, including young adult fiction.
- A passion for learning and for sharing knowledge with others.
- A strong interest in developing curriculum for early adolescents
- An ability and a willingness to adjust instruction and assessment to reflect the needs of individual students.
- Ability to sustain and enhance a strong writing program that emphasizes various genres of writing, including creative, narrative, expository, and poetry.
- An ability and a willingness to teach at a level from Grade 6 through to Grade 9.
- Experience in teaching that honors different kinds of intelligence and values a variety of assessment tools - hands-on projects, dramatic enactments, and student-directed activities
- An appreciation for independent school education and the middle school years
- A commitment to professional growth and innovative thinking
- The ability to work closely with colleagues in your content area and across content areas when choosing themes, essential questions, materials, and interdisciplinary projects
- A clear interest in being part of a community that seeks to challenge prejudice and is committed to diversity and inclusion
- Strong personal and interpersonal skills
