General Responsibilities:

The tax accountant is responsible for maintaining tax records and preparing tax returns, tax-related schedules, and reports. Determine tax liability or collect taxes from individuals or business firms according to prescribed laws and regulations. Prepares paperwork for local, state, and federal level returns to be submitted within specified deadlines. May analyze new tax regulations to ensure the Firm meets all regulations and laws.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Interview clients to obtain additional information on taxable income, deductible expenses, and allowances. Develop a basic understanding of their financial affairs and the scope of their tax liabilities.
  • Discuss the issues, laws, and regulations involved in returns and to resolve problems with returns. Address client questions thoroughly and effectively communicate complex financial information. Explain federal and state tax laws to individuals and companies.   • Review financial records, such as income statements and expenditure documentation, to determine the forms needed to prepare tax returns.
  • Prepare or assist in preparing simple to complex tax returns for individuals or small businesses.
  • Calculate taxes owed or overpaid using adding machines or personal computers and complete entries on forms, following tax form instructions and tax tables. Use all appropriate adjustments, deductions, and credits to keep clients' taxes to a minimum.
  • Consult tax law handbooks or bulletins to determine procedures for preparing atypical returns.
  • Complete audits (i.e., homeowner association, etc.) in compliance with Florida regulations and the Firm’s procedures and standards. Attention to detail is paramount in this task.
  • Accurately enter tax return information into software and e-filing platforms for processing. Check data input or verify totals on forms prepared by others to detect errors in arithmetic, data entry, or procedures. Maintain knowledge of the software to ensure efficient use.
  • Contact clients to address discrepancies and request supporting documentation. Maintain records for each case, including contacts, telephone numbers, and actions taken. Notify clients of any overpayments or underpayments. Furnish clients with sufficient information and advice to ensure correct tax form completion.
  • Calculate form preparation fees according to the required return complexity and processing time. Log in to Breeze and communicate to the executive assistant for timely billing.
  • Maintain knowledge of tax code changes, accounting procedures, and theory to evaluate financial information properly.
  • Conduct audits and review tax returns to verify information or to amend tax liabilities. May oversee the preparation of tax forms by the tax accounting specialist to ensure quality control measures are applied. Guide and assist in tax document preparations.
  • Participate in staff training in accounting software and tools to ensure proficiency.
  • Apply sound time management practices to meet deadlines and complete projects. Regularly update project status for internal tracking.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

  • Knowledge of the Firm’s policies and procedures, industry accounting principles and practices, and the analysis and reporting of financial data.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing excellent customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for assistance, and evaluation of a customer’s satisfaction.
  • Analytical and critically evaluate data, identify issues in documentation, and suggest solutions.
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to pay attention to detail, and ability to complete work tasks thoroughly.
  • Ability to make mathematics calculations and tabulations accurately. Analyze, compare, and interpret facts and figures.
  • Ability to complete various tasks simultaneously under time constraints and stressful situations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Must be able to listen to and discuss facts and concerns from clients, managers, and other stakeholders.
  • Maintain continued proficiency in using technology and software applications, including but not limited to office suite, database, project planning, accounting, and electronic storage software.
  • Committed to continuous improvement and professional development. Attend relevant seminars, workshops, and conferences. Stay informed about industry trends and changes.

Education and Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, economics, or business administration from an accredited college or university or equivalent education or work experience is required.
  • Two (2) to four (4) years of accounting experience in a financial institution or bookkeeping experience required.
  • Enrolled Agent (EA) certification is highly desired.
  • Demonstrate general knowledge of QuickBooks Online.
  • Demonstrate a general knowledge of tax preparation software.

  • Lift up to 20 lbs.
