A Day In The Life

The Driver Trainer is a vital role within USAL's Training Department, directly contributing to the development, safety, and operational success of our driving team. Reporting to the Manager, Driver Training, the Driver Trainer ensures that all drivers are thoroughly trained, evaluated, and coached to uphold USAL's high standards of safety, compliance, and operational excellence. This role incorporates multifaceted responsibilities as both a driver trainer and an adult education instructor. It involves designing, developing, and delivering comprehensive training programs for drivers using adult learning principles and best practices. The Driver Trainer ensures all trainees, regardless of their learning styles or prior experiences, achieve a high level of competency and confidence. By leveraging data-driven insights, technology, and collaborative strategies, this role fosters a culture of continuous improvement and excellence.

As a Trainer, Driver you will :

Adult Education and Learning Integration :

Design training curricula aligned with adult education principles, emphasizing experiential learning, active participation, and application-based activities.

Assess learning outcomes and adjust instructional approaches to meet the needs of individual trainees and groups.

Incorporate advanced instructional strategies, including scenario-based learning and peer coaching.

Mentor trainees in professional development and lifelong learning practices.

Training Development and Delivery :

Design and deliver adult-centered training materials for classroom, in-field, and hands-on sessions, incorporating strategies to accommodate diverse learning styles.

Facilitate sessions on FMCSA regulations, record-keeping, Hours of Service (HOS) compliance, and USAL-specific protocols.

Develop and implement programs aimed at enhancing driver soft skills, such as effective communication, problem-solving, and adaptability.

Utilize technology, including online training platforms, to deliver engaging and interactive learning experiences.

Continuous Improvement Initiatives :

Collaborate with Safety, Quality, and Operational teams to refine training programs.

Provide strategic recommendations to enhance driver skill sets and safety practices.

Continuous Monitoring and Technology Integration :

Regularly monitor the Camera event system to identify and address unsafe driving behaviors and patterns.

Use Camera system data for coaching and retraining to enhance compliance and safety standards.

Driver Competency and Assessment :

Conduct interviews, road tests, and skills assessments of driver candidates.

Provide retraining for drivers based on observed behavior, incidents, or trends identified through monitoring.

Conduct detailed pre-trip inspection training and scoring, as outlined in USAL protocols.

Incident-Related Remediation :

Conduct remedial training post-incident to address safety and performance gaps.

Document remediation plans, actions taken, and feedback provided.

Quality-Focused Remediation :

Implement and manage a dedicated process to ensure damage-free loading and unloading.

Provide remedial training for quality-related issues, including conducting root cause analysis and identifying long-term solutions.

Policy and Regulation Enforcement :

Ensure drivers are taught and follow all company and regulatory safety standards, including HOS compliance and FMCSA requirements.

Teach and reinforce all safety practices involving safe driving, regulatory compliance, and safe cargo handling policies and procedures.

Pre-Trip and Securement Training :

Conduct detailed pre-trip inspection training and scoring, as outlined in USAL protocols.

Emphasize the importance of securement practices that ensure safety and prevent incidents.

What We Need From You

Bachelor's Degree Adult Education, Training & Development, or related field preferred. Pref

Associate's Degree Certifications in adult learning, such as Certified Professional in Learning and Performance (CPLP) or equivalent, are highly desirable. Pref

5-7 years vehicle loading, transporting, and unloading experience. Preferred

1-3 years Demonstrated experience designing and delivering multifaceted adult learning programs, including classroom instruction, hands-on training, and e-learning modules. Preferred

1-3 years Proficiency in leveraging learning management systems (LMS) and other training technologies. Preferred

Strong communication and leadership skills with the ability to adapt to different audiences. (High proficiency)

Knowledge of FMCSR (Parts 383, 390-397, and 399) and applicable Federal, State, and local truck weight and axle laws. (High proficiency)

Class A CDL License Required

Drivers License - MDOT Medical Physical Required

Physical and Environmental Requirements The physical requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by an associate to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the associate is regularly and repeatedly required to talk; hear; stand; walk; stoop; kneel / squat, climb, use hands and fingers, to handle, grip / squeeze and / or feel; push / pull and reach with hands and arms. The associate will be frequently required to balance; crouch, or crawl; reach over-head and taste or smell. The associate must frequently lift and / or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and / or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, night vision, and ability to adjust focus.

Travel Requirements

20% Periodic domestic travel to other terminals, OEM's, etc.
