Position Title: Medication Technician

SUMMARY:
Responsible for assisting residents with the self-administration of medications in accordance with a physician's order.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Ability to read, write, speak clearly and follow written and oral instructions. Medications Management Certification:
- Preferably 1 year experience as a Med Tech
- 6 hour Med Tech training
- 2 hour Med Tech update annually
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Ensure that call lights are being answered in a timely manner.
- Be notified of any incident reports and make sure incident report was completed properly, reported to administration, families and resident’s physician.
- Work and communicate with families that may have a concern
- Be approachable for any questions or concerns that someone (co-workers, med techs, RA’s, residents, families, etc.) may have
- Ensure MORS/ ADL in Quick Mar are charted in a timely manor
- Keep Administration up to date on all resident/family concerns and issues.
- Supervise staffs on floors, participate, and promote teamwork.
- Monitor Dining Room during meal time.
- Ensures Resident Care staff adheres to customer service principles during interaction with residents, families and visitors as well as with other facility staff.
- Assist Resident Care staff in performing duties as needed.
- Participate in Daily Shift change with the staff
- Participate in weekly Med cart Audits to ensure compliance
- Thoroughly and properly train all new Med Techs following the New Hire Training Checklist.
- All other duties assigned by Administration
Med Tech Role:
- Promote and maintain excellent service quality in accordance with established guidelines and assist in maintaining a positive physical and social environment for the residents.
- Communication with residents and resident families as necessary shall be professional and courteous.
- Prepare, assist with and document the administration of medication, following accepted practices, and in accordance with State regulations under the supervision of the AL Administrator.
- At the beginning of the shift, reads all entries and initials the Resident Condition Record since the employee’s last working shift.
- Reports any resident problems or illness requiring attention to the Supervisor and document in 24-hour book.
- Maintain all medications ordered by the health care provider in a locked, central storage.
- Audit your assigned cart before the previous shift leaves to ensure accuracy.
- Allow the next shift coming on to audit your cart with your presence to ensure accuracy.
- All medications that are ordered by the health care provider (inclusive of prescription and OTC medications) must meet the 8 mandated labeling requirements.
- (Physician/practitioner name, resident name, date dispensed, name and strength of drug, quantity of drug, directions for use, pharmacy name, address and telephone number and expiration date.)
- If the determination has been made that the resident needs assistance with medications and a resident requests OTC items be maintained in their room for unsupervised use, the facility must notify the physician and request an order that the resident may keep OTC item in room and self-administer per manufacturer’s directions.
- PRN medications must indicate specific reasons and frequency for use.
- Direction changes: An alert label can be placed on the original supply (not to obstruct any legal labeling components of the package) to indicate a change in dosing/frequency, etc. This alert will afford the staff the opportunity to exhaust the current supply of medications on hand. Never make an alteration on the original label of a prescribed medication.
- A licensed staff member can take a medication change order by telephone. Unlicensed personnel cannot, although they may implement a change once written documentation is received by the health care provider or pharmacist.
- Maintenance of accurate and timely documentation of all medications ordered by the health care provider on a monthly medication observation record.
- Company must make every reasonable effort to ensure that prescriptions for residents who receive assistance with self-administration of medication are refilled in a timely manner.
- If a delay is noted with medication delivery subsequent to availability of responsible party/mail order time frames, etc.; A seven (7) day emergency supply will be ordered from the preferred pharmacy provider and the cost of the necessary medication will be allocated to the responsible party that was responsible for the delay. This measure will be implemented to prevent a negative outcome for the resident and will certainly be communicated to the responsible party in a timely manner
- Maintain all residents’ rights and nine (9) medication rights with all medication management intervention.
- Supervise with self-administration of medications as ordered by health care provider.
- Ensures implementation of the resident care program and resident goals with dietary, activities, facility maintenance and resident care.
- Ensures safety of residents through appropriate behavioral interventions.
- Assist residents with activities of daily living as required, including, but not limited to dressing, grooming, bathing, toileting, escorting and reminding residents of appointments.
- Encourages residents to participate in activities.
- Assists with meal service and snacks.
- Assists new residents upon admission and orients them to the facility, staff, other residents, and routines.
- Assist residents in dining room including serving meals and clearing tables.
- Completes Incident Reports for any unusual situations that occur.
- Complete Resident Weight Record monthly with Supervisors.
- Ensures appropriate and timely response to resident and /or family concerns.
- Demonstrates knowledge of resident care and its impact on residents and their families.
- Attends educational programs to improve skills and knowledge.
- Maintain confidentiality of resident and facility information.
- Completes Medication Sign-Out as needed.
- Know the location and operation of all fire and emergency equipment located in the general work area. Know evacuation routes and exits in work area.
- Attend all mandatory meetings and in-service training sessions.
- Perform and complete all duties assigned in an effective, timely and professional manner.
- Observe infection control procedures and properly correct if needed.
- Accept assigned duties in a cooperative manner.
- Report to work on time as scheduled and consistently demonstrate dependability.
- Report to work in neat, clean attire and consistently present an appropriate professional appearance according to the uniform policy.
- Maintain a professional attitude and consistently work cooperatively with residents, families, supervisor, co-workers and ancillary service providers.
- Complete other duties assigned by the Lead Med Tech/Supervisor/Administrator.

PHYSICAL STRENGTH REQUIRED
The Gardens of Lake Alfred has determined that to perform the essential functions of the job of Lead Shift Leader, that persons must be able to perform the essential physical tasks without posing a direct threat to the health or safety of him/her or others, including residents, co-workers and others.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
Except where appropriate and conducive to accomplishing the goals and objectives of a particular task, the Lead Med Tech will work in a well-lighted area that is ventilated and as physically, innocuous as possible under the conditions which exist at a particular time. Because the essential functions of the job of Lead Med Tech may cause exposure to situations associated with general involvement in a health care facility, including but not limited to exposure to AIDS, HIV and Hepatitis B viruses.
This job requires the following:

ATTIRE
Employees will follow the dress code of the facility, which includes neat, clean, odor-free grooming and will wear the appropriate uniform.
WORK SCHEDULE
Employee will report promptly to the assigned area at the start of each shift and become informed on the current condition of all assigned residents.
SUPERVISOR
Employee reports to the RCC and RCD Supervisors and the Administrator.
JOB CLASSIFICATION
This position is classified as hourly, non-exempt, and does not qualify for the exemption from minimum wage and overtime pay provided by Section 13(a)(1) of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
