Substance Use Disorder Counselors play a critical role in helping individuals overcome addiction and achieve long-term recovery. Overall, the role of a SUD Counselor is to provide support, guidance, and therapeutic interventions to help clients achieve and maintain recovery from addiction. Work should be performed in a cost effective and service-oriented manner as it relates to established organizational standards.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Uphold the Mission, Vision and Values of The Gathering Inn and maintain a guest-first mentality at all times.
- Conduct comprehensive assessments to determine the extent and nature of guest’s addiction issues. This involves gathering information about their substance use history, medical background, mental health status, family dynamics, and other relevant factors.
- Develop personalized treatment plans tailored to each guest’s unique needs, circumstances, and stage of recovery. These plans may include counseling sessions, group therapy, referrals, and integration of various therapeutic approaches.
- Provide one-on-one counseling sessions weekly or bi-weekly to guests to address their substance abuse issues, explore the underlying causes of addiction, and help to develop coping strategies to resist cravings and triggers.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of guest’s interactions, services provided, outcomes achieved, and any other required documentation in a timely, consistent manner. (Electronically & Physical File maintenance required – with regular updates)
- Stay informed about the latest research, treatment techniques, and best practices in the field of substance abuse counseling.
- Must employ a range of de-escalation and crisis intervention techniques to defuse tense situations, reduce aggression, and prevent escalation of conflicts.
QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS:
- Associate degree in Substance Abuse or related field and one year of experience performing addiction counseling activities or have obtained a NCAC/CADC/MAC.
- Knowledge of homelessness, poverty, mental health, substance use disorders, and trauma.
- Experience in working within shelter environments, low-barrier programming, or similar settings is a plus.
- Valid Driver License
