Sports Reporter

Job Summary:

This position will handle a general assignment beat, with a focus on high school sports but possessing the flexibility to occasionally shift among a hodgepodge of community, college and professional sports assignments. The reporter will need to develop strong professional relationships with athletes, coaches and leaders in the community. This reporter must be able to find and break news, cover breaking news with urgency and develop compelling enterprise and analysis. The reporter will also work with others on staff to produce compelling video and alternative story formats to engage readers.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

• Break news on a competitive beat. Quickly, clearly and accurately report breaking news as it happens.
• Build a range of sources throughout the teams and leagues assigned.
• Write analytically for fans looking for a deeper dive into sports and results
• Spot trends on and off the field. Take national topics and relate them on local level. Offer story ideas but also take assignments
• Collaborate with editors, reporters, producers and designers
• Be present on social media. Use it as a tool to build audience, extend the brand and as a way to post news quickly
• Use rich media to enhance storytelling to engage readers.
• Job will require a range of hours, including nights and weekends.
• Fill editing and assignment shifts and other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education & Work Experience Requirements:

• Bachelor's degree
• Minimum of 3 years of professional news experience is preferred.
• Proficiency in sports beat reporting, assigning, editing, social media and digital news operations.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively.
• Knowledge of libel law and other legal issues

• Demonstrated social media proficiency, especially in the field, including an active news hound presence on Facebook and Twitter.
• Ability to distinguish what appeals to an audience to help the strongest stories reach the largest audience.
• Eager to experiment with storytelling across multiple platforms.
• Organizational skills and the ability to work under constant time pressure deadlines.
• Ability to calmly handle live, breaking news situations and changing events.
• Ability to shoot photos and video.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $19.24 - $22.44 per hour
