Job Description Summary

The Sumner M. Redstone Global Center for Prevention and Wellness ( RGC ) at the Milken Institute School of Public Health ( SPH ) is seeking to fill a full-time Senior Center Specialist position at the Foggy Bottom campus. The Senior Center Specialist will provide project and program management on behalf of the RGC . The Senior Center Specialist will report directly to Redstone Chair and RGC Director Timothy Holtz.

Recognizing that both communicable and non-communicable diseases, health inequities, and climate change are interconnected, the RGC at the Milken Institute SPH at the George Washington University works within the University and community partners to support research, share expertise, and advance evidence-based prevention interventions to address these interlinked public health threats both locally and globally.

The RGC is focused on researching and developing evidence-based adaptation and prevention interventions that improve the prevention of both communicable and noncommunicable diseases to climate-sensitive hazards among the most at-risk communities, especially those at high risk of displacement and/or migration. Preventing disease and improving the health of both local, national and global communities is a goal, with particular attention paid to equitable adaptation to climate-related hazards.

RGC currently includes affiliated faculty, full-time staff, and support to graduate students from the Departments of Global Health, Environmental and Occupational Health and Exercise and Nutrition Sciences. The RGC engages with both the MPH and the PhD programs and seeks to be an active collaborator with the Climate and Health Institute and REACH Center (big data, climate solutions, environmental health) within the Milken Institute SPH . The Senior Center Specialist will work closely with the RGC Director, affiliated faculty, staff and students, in service of the center’s research and education vision and mission. This will be within the Milken Institute SPH and with schools and departments across GWU in addition to external stakeholders.

Essential Job Functions

The Senior Center Specialist is responsible for grant writing support, and project management for the Sumner M. Redstone Global Center for Prevention and Wellness. The position will provide project management skills, coordinate programs, analyze data, prepare reports, and develop and implement communications and policy strategies related to climate change, health adaptation, and prevention interventions.

Core Responsibilities Include

  • Identify opportunities for engaging in relevant research processes at local, national, global levels. This may include organizations, programs, and agreements focusing on climate change, community health, communicable and non-communicable disease prevention, food and nutrition, and other areas, considering the many avenues through which climate change affects human health and threatens displacement.
  • Develop, implement, and manage strategies for RGC engagement in identified relevant research processes, in partnership with the RGC Director and affiliated faculty.
  • Develop and write grant applications, budget/resource projections, and IRB protocols for prospective projects.
  • Develop a work plan to establish and supervise projects and programs, conduct in coordination with partners among domestic and global philanthropic organizations carrying out adaptation and prevention-relevant research and/or conducting translational activities; oversee project completion.
  • Independently develop and execute a budget plan, conduct financial monitoring and management of grant activities, and report grant progress.
  • Compile and analyze statistical, financial and other data for incorporation into reports for federal, foundation, and/or other governing agencies.
  • As an expert in category, to research, co-write, and publish white papers, articles, case studies, websites, and/or other communications tools to report and translate RGC research findings for relevant audiences.
  • Develop an annual progress report that will go to the University leadership, GWU external stakeholders and donors.
  • Partner with industry thought leaders and utilize expert networks to organize special events and capacity building initiatives (i.e. speaker series, symposia, workshops) that align with the center’s research objectives.
  • Work closely with the RGC Director and other staff to increase the visibility, prominence, and effectiveness of the RGC .

Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualified candidates will hold a BA/BS in a related discipline plus 7 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.

Preferred Qualifications

Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree and 5 years of relevant professional experience preferred
  • Experience working in grant writing, project management, and project evaluation.
  • Experience/Aptitude in project financial management.
  • Preferable experience working in a higher education environment.
  • Strong writing, editing, strong attention to detail and communication.
  • Flexible, adaptable, team player.
  • Experience working with trainees, colleagues, supervisors, and diverse communities.
  • Creative problem solving and the ability to collaborate effectively with a broad range of offices within GWSPH .
  • An understanding of the health implications of climate change is critical to carry out the responsibilities for RGC program management.
  • Self-motivated, with a strong desire to succeed.
  • Ability to research for opportunities, maintain a high degree of organization, and keep an attention to detail.

Hiring Range $74,232.46 - $144,894.26
