Position Summary:
Seeking a dedicated and compassionate Job Coach to support special needs students on a woodworking job site. The successful candidate will work directly with students, providing hands-on coaching, guidance, and encouragement as they learn and develop basic carpentry skills. This is a unique opportunity to help students gain valuable work experience in a supportive, structured, and safe environment, with an emphasis on skill development, independence, and vocational success.
Key Responsibilities:
- Supervise and Support: Ensure that students are working safely, efficiently, and confidently with woodworking tools and materials. Provide individualized support and adjustments as needed to meet each student's abilities and goals.
- Skills Development: Teach students how to use basic carpentry tools (e.g., saws, hammers, drills, sanders) and materials. Assist in learning techniques for measuring, cutting, assembling, and finishing woodworking projects.
- Safety Instruction: Educate students on the safe operation of tools and machinery, ensuring that safety standards and guidelines are strictly followed.
- Encourage Independence: Foster an environment where students can build self-confidence, independence, and problem-solving skills by allowing them to take ownership of their projects, while providing guidance and support when necessary.
- Behavioral Support: Use positive behavior strategies to address any challenges or obstacles students may face while working. Collaborate with other staff members to develop individualized behavioral and vocational plans.
- Communication and Reporting: Maintain clear and ongoing communication with students, supervisors, and families regarding progress, challenges, and accomplishments.
- Collaborate with Team: Work closely with other educators, job coaches, and support staff to ensure students' overall success in the program and address any emerging needs or concerns.
Qualifications:
- Experience working with special needs populations: Previous experience working with individuals with disabilities, especially in a vocational or educational setting, is strongly preferred.
- Carpentry knowledge: Solid understanding of basic carpentry skills and woodworking tools, including hand tools (e.g., saws, hammers, screwdrivers) and power tools (e.g., drills, sanders, table saws).
- Strong communication skills: Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with students, families, and team members.
- Patience and empathy: Ability to work with students who may have varying levels of cognitive, emotional, or physical disabilities, and adapt teaching methods to meet their individual needs.
- Ability to work independently: Capable of managing tasks and supporting students without constant supervision while ensuring high-quality coaching and safety standards.
