POSITION SUMMARY:
The Finance Director at the Greater Scranton YMCA plays a pivotal role in advancing the mission of the Y, a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening communities through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. As a key member of the CEO’s senior leadership team, the Finance Director oversees financial management, investments, and accounting system while providing strategic direction for business operations and initiatives. This role also positions the Y as a community leader, fostering collaboration to address critical social issues.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Monitor monthly financial operations, prepare analyses and reports, and provide guidance to CEO and management staff. Collaborate with the management team to address financial outcomes and allocate resources to achieve strategic goals.
  • Develop, review, and update internal control systems, and ensure compliance with policies and standards. Provide actionable recommendations for improvement.
  • Manage and lead the accounting/finance, accounting system, ensuring efficient and effective operations.
  • Oversee the annual audit process, maintain communication with external auditors, and ensure compliance with accounting standards and legal requirements.
  • Work directly with assigned committees to develop policies, monitor implementation, and support board needs.
  • Oversee the preparation of reports for United Way, YMCA of the USA, and governmental agencies. Collaborate with external auditors on tax filings, including IRS Form 990.
  • Lead the development of the annual operating budget, guiding the organization in strategic resource allocation and ensuring timely and realistic budgets.
  • Manage accounts payable, including maintaining records, processing payments, and ensuring accuracy.
  • Establish and maintain banking and financing relationships to support organizational needs.
  • Maintain accurate financial records and ensure all transactions are recorded promptly.
  • Foster strong relationships with auditors, bankers, investment counselors, attorneys, and other professional advisors.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the organization’s mission and goals.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, or a related field; MBA, CPA, or CMA preferred.
  • YMCA Organizational Leader certification or willingness to obtain.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in accounting and fiscal management.
  • Strong knowledge of budget development, financial reporting, cash management, taxes, banking, and debt financing.
  • Proficiency in computer systems, including system selection, implementation, and project management.
  • Experience in investment management and asset allocation is a plus.
  • Proven ability to manage and lead staff teams effectively.
  • Prior experience with nonprofit or voluntary organizations is preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • The physical demands include using a computer for extended periods, communicating via phone or smart devices, and occasionally lifting up to 10 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close and distance vision and the ability to adjust focus.
  • The work environment is typically moderate in noise level.
