Greenlining Institute seeks a Chief Impact Officer (CIO) as an executive leadership role responsible for strategically overseeing and maximizing the organization's economic, social and policy impact by designing, implementing, and evaluating programs, advocating for policy change, building partnerships, and ensuring all activities align with the mission, with a strong focus on equity and justice across all operations and initiatives; reporting directly to the CEO and working closely with other issue area departments to achieve measurable results and demonstrate the organization's positive impact on the community. Provide executive leadership and strategic oversight in managing organizational operations, including fostering productive labor relations, collaborating with unions, and ensuring alignment with collective bargaining agreements to support organizational goals and workforce development.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Strategic Direction and Oversight of the Impact teams and respective initiatives :
  • In partnership with the President, the CIO holds primary responsibility for the strategic and operational activities to lead, manage and coach the impact initiatives and program teams.
  • Serves as a key leadership team member in making strategic decisions affecting GLI initiatives and issue areas of focus - with policy.
  • Collaborate with President, Vice Presidents and Directors to shape a strategy that uplifts Greenlining’s work in the most high-impact and strategic ways.
  • Develop and implement strategies that align with the organization’s mission to promote economic equity for underserved communities.
  • Lead the development of short- and long-term impact goals and set priorities in collaboration with the executive team and Board of Directors.
  • Provide thought leadership on policy initiatives, advocacy efforts, and programmatic priorities.
  • Program Management & Oversight :
  • Oversee and evaluate the organization’s Just and Healthy Economic equity initiatives and programs to ensure they are effective, evidence-based, and aligned with the organization’s mission.
  • Lead efforts to refine program design, implementation, and evaluation processes to maximize impact.
  • Ensure alignment of programs with strategic priorities and community needs, making adjustments as needed based on feedback and outcomes.
  • Personifies an executive presence, a dynamic professional style and the ability to inspire confidence to all levels of the organization and with all constituencies.
  • Embodies GLI’s values and standards for conduct and ethics at all times.
  • Genuinely promotes GLI’s culture of inclusion and champions our mission.
  • Supports knowledge management, internal learning and succession planning.
  • Establishes and implements the infrastructure needed to grow all program areas.
  • Ensures strong positive relationships are developed with other departments, and internal and external stakeholders.
  • Serve as a spokesperson and bridge-builder on Greenlining’s impact and Government Affairs work.
  • Steward relationships with external agencies (federal, state, local) to ensure GLI’s best interests are represented and to determine support for external community-building activities.
  • Oversees and monitors compliance with relevant federal, state and local regulations.
  • Staff Leadership & General Management :
  • Directly supervises VP’s, Sr. Directors, Directors, working in the impact and policy teams.
  • Oversee the management of unionized staff, ensuring compliance with collective bargaining agreements, while fostering a collaborative work environment and addressing duties related to labor relations and contract administration.
  • Fosters engagement and organizational commitment of staff by effectively leading, providing direction, setting goals, and communicating information to empower staff for optimal outcomes.
  • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Proactively aligns individual work plans with team level goals and organizational aims.
  • Uses rigorous methods and systems to keep projects on track and achieve team goals.
  • Cultivates growth in all core competency areas including Communication, Collaboration, Strategic Innovation, Technical Expertise, Adaptability and Accountability.
  • Encourages professional development by promoting a growth mindset, providing stretch opportunities and coaching staff on career progression strategies.
  • Support and maintain a diverse and inclusive workplace culture to attract, retain, and motivate an exceptional, high performing team.
  • Provides leadership in applying and embedding a diversity, equity and inclusion framework to the workplace environment and experience.
  • Support staff alignment with organizational priorities and collaboration across teams.
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities while adhering to Greenlining’s policies and applicable employment laws.
  • Fundraising and Financial Management :
  • Support and partner with the President and board members on all major fundraising initiatives and activities.
  • Resource Mobilization & Sustainability - Collaborate with the Development team to identify funding opportunities and secure resources for impact programs and initiatives.
  • Assist in developing grant proposals and reports to funders that clearly communicate the organization’s impact and outcomes.
  • Participate in strategic planning and budgeting processes to align resources with priorities and ensure sustainability.
  • Develop strong relationships with existing funders and cultivate relationships with new supporters.
  • Work in partnership with the Development team to secure funding necessary to meet Greenlining’s budgetary needs.
  • Communications and Stakeholder Relations :
  • Broadly and strategically promotes and positions the activities of the division’s goals to ensure that the organization is consistently presented to relevant stakeholders.
  • Guides the development of a coordinated communications strategy to effectively tell the story of Greenlining's work and incorporate strategic communications into our advocacy.
  • Builds strong ties with and helps galvanize The Greenlining Coalition - a diverse group of community-based organizations that have banded together around a common vision of social justice.
  • Establish sound working relationships and cooperative arrangements with other allied community groups and organizations.
  • Represent the programs, policy positions, and point of view of the organization to agencies, community partners, funders, and the general public via writing, speaking, conferences and other engagements.
  • Prepares periodic reports outlining the finances, operational successes or challenges, and recommendations for accelerating GLI’s impact.

Qualifications, Skills And Abilities

  • 10-15 years in similar executive level role with strong and significant track record of success in operational excellence, fundraising, development, and communications.
  • Bachelor’s Degree required. Master’s degree or equivalent professional experience in a related field strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated commitment to Greenlining’s mission, vision, values and goals and an understanding of the intersectionality in Greenlining’s work, culture, and workplace.
  • Ability to manage staff in a unionized environment to include adherence to and support of collective bargaining agreement.
  • Demonstrated commitment and experience in advancing equity and inclusion for people of color.
  • Deep experience and direct relevance expertise.
  • Working knowledge of the local, regional and national landscape, including key stakeholders, data points and trends for issue areas supported by Greenlining.
  • Ability to facilitate outcomes-oriented meetings, retreat activities, and / or workshops.
  • A consensus-builder with strong emotional intelligence to relate to, understand and lead a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and sustain people-centric engagement strategies.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to confidently speak and represent the organization in local, regional and national forums.
  • Ability and willingness to travel, as needed, to meetings and conferences throughout the state and possibly other locations.
  • Fiscal management and fundraising experience including experience cultivating relationships with funders and providing strategic input into grant proposal development.
  • Ability to evaluate existing systems, and develop and implement improvements.
  • Courageous, strategic, collaborative and visionary leadership while being accountable, approachable, effective and inspiring.
  • Must be able to forge new relationships to build GLI's visibility, impact, and financial resources.
  • Ability to build and motivate strong, efficient teams that exhibit high levels of trust and accountability.
  • The scope of responsibilities is not limited to those listed above and may change as organizational needs evolve and duties as assigned. Specific work plan goals are developed each year to inform performance.
