The Greensboro Science Center (GSC) is seeking a qualified candidate to fill the role of Animal Care Specialist within our Terrestrial Department. This full-time position will report directly to and be supervised by our Curatorial team. The Greensboro Science Center is a 68,000 square-foot AAM accredited science museum as well as a 33,000 square-foot aquarium and also includes our 22-acre zoo.
This Animal Care Specialist position will have primary responsibility over the Javan gibbons, fossa, howler monkeys and binturongs . This position will also work in a team setting where they will occasionally assist with animals such as pygmy hippo, cassowary, okapi and flamingos. Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to: developing and implementing general husbandry protocols (diets, feeding techniques, cleaning, preventative health, operant conditioning, enrichment, etc), exhibit design and remodeling, supervision of students/interns, and public education/interaction. In addition, all keepers are expected to assist others in the shared responsibilities pertaining to common use areas, and provide back-up support to our children’s zoo and ambassador animal collections. Skills associated with this position include strong observation skills, creative thinking, adaptability, and ability to communicate effectively, as well as a comfortable working knowledge of training. We also appreciate a strong work ethic and initiative to grow within this career.
In the next 1-3 years GSC will also be growing exponentially with plans to expand by building a biodome and aquatic quarantine facility. Animal Care Specialists may work outdoors in diverse weather environments, on varied terrain, and must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. Candidates should expect to work a 40-hour work week including weekends and holidays. The salary for this position will depend on experience with a minimum range starting at $15.50/hour. This is to be accompanied by a full benefit package including medical, dental and vision insurance, retirement, paid holidays, and annual leave.
