Employer: Greensboro Science Center Title: PT Lead Gardener
Job Type: Part-time
Hours: 25 hours/week, 7 am (or earlier) - noon, M - F Job Description:
In collaboration with the Horticulture team and departmental goals, the Lead Gardener horticulture team member cares for select high density botanical garden zones and helps to educate, train, and lead maintenance efforts in high-visual public areas with staff or volunteers. The Lead Gardener plans for seasonal design in collaboration with the team, maintains select regular botanical sections but may team-up and rotate to other areas as needed. This can extend to animal exhibit zones in coordination with zoo staff or for larger volunteer groups.
Must be available weekdays with the flexibility to work potentially early or late schedules in various outdoor weather conditions. Morning timeframe may shift seasonally with daylight hours and early mornings during summer schedule. Pay range for this position is $14.25 - $16.25 per hour based on experience.
Knowledge Of:
- Prior Gardening/Landscaping experience, especially beneficial within public garden spaces with a high diversity of plant species
- Knowledgeable in proper horticultural practices and seasonal care
- Prior experience with landscaping equipment preferred
- Skilled in the safe use of the general array of garden hand tools, power equipment, and utility vehicles
- Can adhere to campus and safety protocols
- Minimum qualifications include a high school degree or equivalent G.E.D. and experienced volunteer or previous work in landscaping or the horticultural field
- An associate’s or bachelor’s degree in horticulture, biology, the plant sciences, related environmental science or equivalent certifications and work experience is very beneficial

Responsibilities and Duties:
- Basic gardening tasks
- Mulching, edging, and weeding garden spaces
- Installs and maintains plants
- Properly prunes trees and shrubs for aesthetics as well as plant health, deadheading, and seasonal management of plant materials with conservation in mind
- Work with irrigation, soil conditioning, fertilizer schedules, monitors and maintain plant health, pest/disease control, composting, through sustainable landscaping practices
- Educate, train, and lead maintenance efforts in high-visual public areas with staff or volunteers
- Coordinates certain volunteer and staff efforts
Environmental Factors:
- Required to walk, sit and stand for extended periods of time
- Ability to work in all weather conditions for various lengths of time under a variety of conditions including both hot and cold temperatures, high humidity, and exposure to various plants and animals
- Safely and comfortably navigate uneven surfaces including gravel, grass, hills, and stairs
- Must be able to lift 50 lb bags
- Must have a valid NC driver’s license
