Position: Lead Sexual Assault Advocate
Compensation: Starting at $22/hr.

Reports To: Sexual Violence Program Director

Position Purpose:
The Lead Sexual Assault Advocate will provide crisis response, advocacy, and case management services to clients at The Harbor. Services will reflect our mission to provide advocacy, prevention, and support to promote self-determination and hope for survivors of domestic and sexual violence, and stalking. This position has a specific focus on sexual assault advocacy and outreach. The Lead Sexual Assault Advocate will provide staff training and community education on the dynamics of sexual violence, options for medical care and reporting, The Harbor’s services, and coordinate services with the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) midwives. This position has been created as part of a larger sexual assault program designed to increase awareness about sexual assault and the available services in the community, decrease the shame and stigma surrounding survivors of sexual assault, and provide increased access to trauma informed medical services through a partnership with the Astoria Birth Center.

General Responsibilities:

  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with state and federal requirements for advocates
  • Provide confidential, trauma-informed, culturally responsive services to promote self-determination for participants
  • Provide one-time and on-going case management advocacy to survivors of domestic and sexual violence
  • Accompany and support domestic and sexual violence survivors at medical and forensic exams, law enforcement interviews, and court hearings
  • Provide occasional on-call advocacy for in-person emergency response
  • Lead Sexual Assault Awareness month campaign projects and outreach
  • Coordinate services with SANEs, including drafting and implementing protocols and procedures for providing SAFEs, creating assessment and evaluation tools, and implementing best practices
  • Organize and facilitate the advocacy portion of SANE certification training for new SANEs at Astoria Birth Center
  • Create and facilitate staff training on sexual assault dynamics and supporting survivors
  • Participate in the Enhancing Sexual Assault Services Initiative (ESASI) Cohort to enhance sexual violence related services
  • Work with the Sexual Violence Program Director to develop an outreach plan to bring awareness to current and future services
  • Create and facilitate trainings for local organizations and businesses related to The Harbor’s services, sexual assault and sexual harassment, prevention, survivor rights, and employer responsibilities
  • Organize quarterly restorative justice storytelling projects by organizing volunteer or contracted poets, artists, and writers to conduct 4-6 week workshops for survivors; with the permission of each individual, showcase these projects at Astoria Art Walk, in local galleries, and at other art-based events
  • Maintain accurate participant files utilizing our electronic database
  • Stay informed of community resources and coordinated community responses
  • Receive continuing education and training regarding serving survivors of domestic and sexual violence and stalking
  • Serve as a visible spokesperson and advocate for The Harbor’s mission and programs in the community
  • Attend weekly required all-staff meetings
  • Other tasks and projects as assigned

Required Qualifications & Experience:

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Skilled at creating presentations (Canva and/or Microsoft Powerpoint), public speaking and/or training facilitation
  • Demonstrated ability to problem solve and be proactive
  • Ability to prioritize a multitude of tasks and handle a variety of projects simultaneously
  • Basic computer technology skills, including Microsoft Office programs. Ability to learn new technology systems and implement within scope of duties
  • Must have transportation, current insurance coverage, and a valid driver's license
  • One or more years’ experience working with survivors of sexual violence
  • One of more years’ experience creating and facilitating presentations or trainings

Pay: From $22.00 per hour
